Rickie Fowler: Player Profile

Who is Rickie Fowler?

Rickie Fowler is one of the most liked players on the PGA Tour. The American has several wins on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and has finished in the top three in all four majors.

Having taught himself to play golf on a local driving range, Fowler attended Oklahoma State University, and is now famous for his Sunday orange, in honour of his college days. The American spent 36 weeks atop the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He became the USA’s youngest ever Ryder Cup player in 2010, and won the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award that same year.

His first professional victory came in 2011 at the Kolon Korea Open, before he won on the PGA Tour for the first time the next year. That win came at the Wells Fargo Championship. Fowler has gone on to secure 10 professional wins, including the Players Championship and the Deutsche Bank Championship, a FedEx Cup Playoffs event.

Fowler finished inside the top five in all four majors in 2014, becoming only the third player to do so. However, in failing to take any of the titles home, he became the first to do so without a win. A T5 finish at the Masters Tournament was followed up by runners-up finishes at both the US Open and the Open Championship. He ended that major season with a T3 at the PGA Championship. The American has gone on to finish in the top five in major championships on eight occasions.

After suffering a loss of form which coincided with the shutdown of golf during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fowler went four years without a win. Eventually, he got back in the winners’ circle, with an emotional play-off victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2023.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
