Maja Stark rubberstamped her status as one of Europe’s most exciting golfers by winning the 2025 US Women’s Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
The 25-year-old Swede led by one shot after 54 holes ahead of Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez in pursuit of her first major title, and led World No.1 Nelly Korda by three shots.
Stark remained in front throughout the final round. Despite making just her second bogey on Sunday on the 17th hole, she took a three-shot lead up the 18th hole with Korda and Rio Takeda in the clubhouse on 5-under-par.
She plotted her way to a bogey on the 72nd hole, and banked $2.4 million for a level-par scorecard and a two-shot win – the biggest prize in women’s golf.
The last Swede to win a major in the women’s game was Anna Nordqvist at the 2021 AIG Women’s Open. It is also the 18th time Sweden has taken home a women’s major, with Annika Sorestam having won 10 herself.
Maja Stark: US Open champion player profile
She was born in Abbekas in December 1999 and began playing golf at a young age. She represented Sweden through many age groups, and won both the European Girls’ Team Championship and the European Ladies’ Team Championship as an amateur.
Stark then moved to the States, playing for the Oklahoma State University team, where she was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in 2020.
She turned professional the year after, and was victorious in just her second start. She won the PGA Championship at Trelleborgs Kommun on the LET Access Series. Stark went on to win twice on the Ladies European Tour that year, and she now has six titles on the tour in total.
One of those came at the ISPS Handa World Invitational in 2022, a co-sanctioned event with the LPGA Tour. The win there, which included a course record 63, secured her membership on the LPGA Tour.

Thanks to her incredible performances over the two-year stint between the biennial competition, Stark easily qualified for the 2023 Solheim Cup, where she made her debut for Team Europe. She was one of five Swedes in the team, playing under captain and compatriot Suzann Pettersen.
And now, she is a major champion.
