Who is Charley Hull?

Charley Hull is one of the biggest characters in the women’s game, having been a star from a very young age through both the amateur and professional circuits.

She showed her abilities from a young age, winning a significant 18-hole competition at Turnberry at the age of of just 9. She went on to reach the top three in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and played on the GB&I Curtis Cup team in 2012.

Hull turned professional at the start of 2013, and recorded five straight runner-up finishes on the Ladies European Tour. She was rewarded with the LET Rookie of the Year award, before then winning both the Order of Merit and Player of the Year in 2014. She has six professional titles, and three runner-up finishes in the major championships.

In 2013, Hull made history in the Solheim Cup, as she became the youngest player to ever feature in the biennial tournament. She was just 17 years of age when she made her debut at the Colorado Golf Club, with her two points helping Europe to a first victory on American soil. She has not missed a Solheim Cup since, with her sixth appearance coming in the 2023 edition at Finca Cortesin.

Youngest Solheim Star

Charley Hull made history at the 2013 Solheim Cup, as she became the youngest player to ever play in the competition. She was just 17-years-old when she was picked by captain Liselotte Neumann, and she added two points to the European cause.

Winning at Turnberry Before 10

When she was just 9, Hull won a significant 18-hole handicap event against adults at Turnberry. She won with a score of 28 stableford points, playing off a handicap of 26. That would soon come down. 

Three-Time Major Runner-Up

Hull is yet to win a major championship, but she has finished runner-up on three separate occasions. The first came at the Chevron Championship in 2016, before she finished 2nd at both the US Women’s Open and AIG Women’s Open in 2023. In total, the Englishwoman has nine top-10 finishes in the majors.

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
