What can we expect from Full Swing season two on Netflix?

Chad Mumm, the chief creative officer of Vox Media, has announced that Full Swing is back for its second season on Netflix on March 6.

The first season of the docu-series encapsulating the chaotic world of professional golf was released in February 2023.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as LIV Golf’s Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, headlined the show that aimed to cater for both golf fans and casual viewers.

Mumm revealed the release date of the latest instalment at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am alongside US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who is set to feature after enjoying a stellar 2023.

“We’re really excited to share with you all what we’ve put together for this second season,” he said. “The reception for season one was beyond my wildest dreams honestly and it’s been a dream come true to get to make this show.

“As you would probably imagine, the last year in pro golf was as dramatic or more than what we saw in season one. I’m excited to announce today the cast list for the series.

“We’re going to be doing episodes featuring Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark, Joel Dahmen, Matt Fitzpatrick, Alex Fitzpatrick, Tom Kim, Keegan Bradley, Zach Johnson, Justin Thomas, Luke Donald, Justin Rose, and as you could imagine, a heavy dose of Ryder Cup in Italy.

“So (I) couldn’t be more excited about the arc of the season.”

What will feature in Full Swing season two?

Within the 900 hours shot by Netflix, the Ryder Cup will be included as a two-episode special to end the season, the 44th edition of the biennial battle between Europe and the USA.

Proceedings in Rome were largely dominated by Team Europe, but also by the pay debate that surrounded America’s Patrick Cantlay and his choice not to wear a hat.

“It’s the first time that the Ryder Cup has allowed the level of access that we got this year to both captains throughout the entire year,” Mumm added. “You’re going to see a look inside the Ryder Cup that no one has ever seen before.

“So unprecedented levels of access, but also unprecedented levels of access to the entire team building process, including cameras rolling live with both the captains and the players as they receive their captains’ picks.”

One of the most significant moments of last year, or any year in the sport, came on June 6 when the PGA Tour announced a framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund, the primary investor in LIV Golf.

After months of hostility between the tour, its chief executive Jay Monahan and Greg Norman’s start-up Saudi-funded circuit, a compromise was reached and announced on live television with Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan sitting side by side in the CNBC studio.

“We start off the year and follow the first part of the season culminating in an eventful early June announcement that threw the world of pro golf into a really interesting moment of turmoil that we were riding along for.

“I think you’ll be shocked and excited to see just how much we are able to show you what it was like on the inside during that moment in time.”

Clark, who won his maiden major title at Los Angeles Country Club in that same month, is a new protagonist in Full Swing as he looks to open golf fans up to his family life and career.

His victory was particularly poignant as 10 years before, his mother Lisa died of breast cancer. “I just felt like my mom was watching over me,” he said after sealing victory.

“I didn’t really have anything to hide,” Clark said. “I also think it’s part of my calling in both golf and in life to kind of share my story.

“I’ve had a lot of adversity and challenges thrown my way and I think my story will I hope inspire a lot of people and the people that have had similar stuff happen in their life that maybe this is inspiration for them to keep going and anything like that.”

Mumm also pointed out the inclusion of the Fitzpatrick brothers. Season one showed Matt winning the US Open, while season two could show Alex’s rise through the professional ranks and qualifying for his first Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

Full Swing attempts to reach out to non-golf fans as well as die-hard lovers of the sport, which is why during some points of season one, the very basics of scoring and tournaments were broken down in simple terms.

When speaking of “creative changes” in the show in 2024, Mumm addressed the efforts to reach a wider audience:

“We don’t explain what a cut is in this episode or this series, which I’m very excited about for season two. Part of it, is you’ve got to realise Netflix has such a global audience.

“It’s the largest platform for entertainment and this is going out to in like 51 different countries, it’s just a huge – 190 countries in 50 languages?

“We were ranked in the top 10 in 12 countries you have to recognise that you’re not just making this kind of show for golf fans like you’re trying to reach people who are just fans of great stories.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is anecdotally how many people are not die-hard golf fans fell in love with these characters in the sport by virtue of watching season one.

“I think as a die-hard golf nut myself, like it was tough to have to explain what a par is and what a birdie means and what an eagle is.

“What I love about this season is we just throw you right back into the action. It almost picks up exactly where season one ended. Episode one picks up with Rory McIlroy, who at the time is No. 1 in the world and is thrown into a very kind of chaotic first quarter of the season.

“So anyway, yeah, we made some creative changes in the fact that we don’t have to explain the basics of golf anymore, we can just take you right into the drama.”
