Following a Sunday showdown at Sawgrass, the Valspar Championship brings the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing to a close this week.

The tournament was first played in 2000, and usually attracts big crowds and a very decent field of players.

Played at the same course each year – one that has hosted the PGA Tour since the early 1990s – the Valspar offers a real test for all that take it on.

Recent winners of the tournament include Paul Casey (below), Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth. Who will take home the title this year?

Frequently Asked Questions about the Valspar Championship

When and where will the Valspar Championship take place?

The 2024 edition of the Valspar Championship will take place on the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club. THe venue is located in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Who won last year’s Valspar Championship?

American Taylor Moore was the victor at Innisbrook in 2023. He finished on 10-under-par to defeat Adam Schenk by a single shot and to claim his first PGA Tour victory.

What is the history around the Valspar Championship?

The Valspar Championship has been around since the turn of the 21st Century, and has had a number of different names due to sponsorship reasons.

The Innisbrook Resort had played host to the PGA Tour since 1990, with the JCPenney Classic being played at the Tampa venue for a decade prior to the inception of the Tampa Bay Classic.

The Tampa Bay Classic began in 2000, and was originally played in the fall. After going through a number of names, the event became the Valspar Championship in 2014.

Some big names have won the event, while there are four two-time winners at the Valspar – K.J. Choi, Retief Goosen, Paul Casey and Sam Burns.

How do golfers qualify for the Valspar Championship?

As with most full-field events on the PGA Tour, there is a system for determining who will feature in every event. These factors include the current season’s Priority Ranking, along with other exemptions and qualifying categories.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
