Lexi Thompson will make PGA Tour debut at Shriners Children’s Open
Lexi Thompson will follow in the footsteps of Brittany Lincicombe and Michelle Wie West by playing on the PGA Tour next week…
Lexi Thompson will shortly become part of a very exclusive group of women’s golfers.
The 28-year-old has been given a sponsorship invite to play on the PGA Tour in the Shriners Children’s Open next week at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
She will become only the seventh women’s golfer to play on the US circuit and the first since Brittany Lincicome at the 2018 Barbasol Championship.
“I’m hopeful that my ability to play with the men next week at the Shriners Children’s Open sends a great message to the young women that you can chase your dream regardless of how hard it is,” Thompson said in a statement.
“I cannot wait to come to the city of Las Vegas, and I’m grateful to Shriners Children’s for this opportunity to spend the week alongside these inspirational kids.”
The one-time major champion will hope to join an even more promised land alongside Babe Zaharias who remains the only woman to make a PGA Tour cut at the 1945 Los Angeles Open.
Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley and Shirley Spork have also played in a PGA Tour event, while Michelle Wie West competed in eight of them from age 14.
Thompson has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour since earning her membership in 2012, including a victory at the old Kraft Nabisco Championship and the Race to the CME Globe.
She was most recently seen coming tied for eighth at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship after playing for the USA at the Solheim Cup.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lexi to the 2023 tournament,” executive director of Shriners Children’s Open Patrick Lindsey said.
“Shriners Children’s mission is to help all children live their best life regardless of what medical challenges lay in front of them.
“We are eager to have Lexi on the course and continue to break through barriers, just as our more than 1.5 million patients do every day.”
