The John Deere Classic returns for its 64th edition as this week’s offering on the PGA Tour.

1971 saw the inaugural edition of the John Deere Classic, which has called a number of places home during its six-decade history.

During that time, several big names have been victorious in the event, with Steve Stricker being one of the men to have won the tournament on three occasions.

More recently, the likes of Brian Harman, Jordan Spieth and Lucas Glover have all been victorious. Austria’s Sepp Straka (below) is the reigning champion, after winning by two last year.

For the first four years of its life, the tournament was held in Iowa. 1975 saw a move to Illinois and the event has remained in the state ever since.

2000 saw TPC Deere Run take over the reigns as tournament host, another in the large catalogue of venues in the Tournament Players Club.

D.A. Weibring, the other three-time winner of the event, designed the Par 71 layout at TPC Deere Run, which is Silvis, Illinois.

Frequently Asked Questions about the John Deere Classic

When and where will the John Deere Classic take place?

The 2024 edition of the John Deere Classic will take place between July 4-7. The event will be held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois – the venue that has hosted the tournament since the turn of the 21st Century.

Who won last season’s tournament?

Austria’s Sepp Straka was the victor at last year’s John Deere Classic, winning by two shots from the American duo of Brendon Todd and Alex Smalley. It was his second PGA Tour title after winning the Honda Classic 17 months earlier.

What is the history around the John Deere Classic?

The John Deere Classic began back in 1971 as the Quad Cities Open Invitational. Due to sponsorship, the event has been through eight name changes, and has been known as the John Deere Classic since 1999.

A year later, the event made TPC Deere Run its permanent home, and in recent years, the event has become part of the Open Qualifying Series.

The event has seen plenty of historic moments. In both 2005 and 2006, Michelle Wie West made appearances, while in 2013, Jordan Spieth became the first teenager to win on the PGA Tour in more than eight decades.

Much earlier in the tournament’s lifetime, the great Sam Snead became the first player to shoot his age on the PGA Tour. He did so with a round of 67 in 1979. He would go on to card a 66 in the final round that very week.

Only two men have been victorious at the John Deere Classic on three occasions. D.A. Weibring had wins spanning 16 years, while Steve Stricker won in three successive years from 2009 to 2011.

Deane Beman, Scott Hoch, David Frost and Jordan Spieth are all two-time winners of the tournament.

How do golfers qualify to play in Illinois?

The John Deere Classic is one of the full-field tournaments on the PGA Tour. The tour has a standardised system which it uses to determine who makes the field based on the Priority Ranking, along with other categories.

Here are the categories of entries for the 2024 edition:

  • FedEx Cup Champions in the last five years
  • PGA Tour winners in the last two years
  • Top 30 on this year’s FedEx Cup Points List
  • Top 125 on the previous year’s FedEx Cup Points List
  • Top 10 on the previous year’s DP World Tour Race to Dubai
  • Top 30 on previous year’s Korn Ferry Tour Points List
  • Top 5 and ties from PGA Tour Q-School
  • No.1 player from PGA Tour University
  • Tournament, sponsors and other exemptions

What are the odds for the 2024 John Deere Classic?

Betting for the 2024 tournament is live via bet365.

You can check out our betting preview for the week’s action, which also includes the Aramco Team Series – London, here when it goes live.

Is there a cut at the John Deere Classic?

There will be a cut at the halfway stage in Illinois. Those that are within the top 65 and ties will make it through to the weekend to have a shot at winning the tournament on Sunday evening.

Can LIV Golf players feature in the event?

The 2017 winner of the John Deere Classic – Bryson DeChambeau – now plies his trade in the LIV Golf League.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
