The FedEx St Jude Championship was the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour schedule, which meant it had an almighty purse to come with it.

There was a $20 million prize purse up for grabs at TPC Southwind in Memphis, $3.6 million of which went to the winner, Justin Rose. The 45-year-old beat J.J. Spaun after three holes of a sudden-death playoff.

The best and most in-form players competed, as only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup rankings at this stage are eligible to compete. The second leg of the Playoffs is the BMW Championship, then the Tour Championship ends the season.

Last year, the winner of the FedEx St Jude Championship earned a cool $3.6 million, a little less than the amount of money you win if you finish top of the leaderboard at a LIV Golf event, which is $4 million. This is what the winner receives at a player-hosted Signature Event on the PGA Tour in 2025.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial and the Genesis Invitational are the player-hosted Signature Events that have 36-hole cuts and give away 20% of the purse to the tournament winner.

Since Tony Finau won this event in 2021, the purse has more than doubled. Finau won $1,710,000 of the $9,500,000 purse. This is a sign of professional golf’s direction of travel.

Some of the best players in the world have won this event in the last 15 years. Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, and Adam Scott have all tasted victory.

Here was the Signature Event schedule for the 2025 PGA Tour season. The Players Championship is not a Signature Event but offers 750 FedEx Cup points for the winner and a total purse of $25 million.

The Sentry: January 2 – 5
Winner: Hideki Matsuyama

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: January 30 – Feb 2
Winner: Rory McIlroy
