The PGA Championship was first hosted in 1916, and it has been held around the country at more than 60 venues in the United States. This is the major hosted by the PGA of America, and it is a test that mostly resembles a PGA Tour event set-up.
Over the years, there have been 73 different champions, and until 1992, there were only four nationalities on the trophy (England, United States, Australia, and South Africa).
The last nine winners have all been American, but prior to that, there were victors from around the world. Players from Northern Ireland, Germany, Ireland, Fiji and South Korea have all been triumphant in the 21st Century.
The Wanamaker Trophy is the biggest of the four major trophies, and one that all golfers want to get their names on. It used to be a match play event, now like the other major tournaments and 99% of golf tour events, it is a stroke play event.
The reigning champion of the PGA Championship is Xander Schauffele, who overcame Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland in dramatic fashion to win his first major title. He finally dispelled any questions over his ability to perform on the biggest stage, and he proved this even more two months later when he won The Open Championship in brutal conditions at Royal Troon.
