PGA Championship betting tips: Who will conquer at Kiawah?

Golf form expert Barry Plummer picks out four players he expects to challenge at Kiawah Island

PGA Championship betting tips

Bazza’s Banker: Jordan Spieth @ 15/1 with Bet365

This selection has a feel of ‘Dustin Johnson at the 2020 Masters’ about it, in the fact that Spieth arrives here in blistering form and I cannot find any reason to oppose him. That selection worked out well for us in November, so I am more than happy to take a chance on Spieth securing the career Grand Slam with a PGA Championship win. Spieth arrives at Kiawah Island off the back of a win, two top-5s and two top-10s in his last six starts. In addition to his recent strong form, he also ranks 9th for SG: Tee-to-green, 20th for SG: Putting and 3rd for SG: Total in the last three months. After a more than respectable performance at the Masters a few weeks ago, I believe Jordan is ready to get back to winning major championships as he ascends back towards the top of world golf.

The next best: Viktor Hovland @ 25/1 with Bet365

As a young rising talent with a very bright future ahead of him, Hovland fits a similar profile to last year’s winner Morikawa. Interestingly, the last time the PGA Championship was held at this venue, seven of the top-10 players where European. That trend, along with recent form reading 3-3-25-21, suggest he has a chance here and when you consider he has won on a similar course at the Mayakoba Classic, he becomes very appealing. That event in Mexico, at the El Camaleon Golf Club, was also played on Paspalum surfaces, so Hovland should have no trouble navigating these greens. It would be a fitting way to mark the next step in his career after a very promising 12 months, and at this price he certainly represents each-way value.

The outsider: Cameron Smith @ 40/1 with Bet365

Smith has been arguably one of the players of the season so far, with a win at the Zurich Classic alongside countrymen Marc Leishman reminding everyone of his quality last time out. Smith has been on an incredible run of form this year, with a win and four top-11 finishes in his last seven starts. He also ranks 6th for SG: Putting, 13th for SG: Tee-to-green and 1st for SG: Total in the last three months. With three PGA Tour victories to his name, and a growing worldwide reputation, Smith has a great chance to take the next step this week at Kiawah Island.

The long shot: Billy Horschel @ 140/1 with Bet365

I quite frankly cannot believe the price being offered for Billy Horschel. Having risen to 18th in the world rankings, thanks to a win at the WGC-Match Play and a runner-up finish at the WGC-Championship, Horschel appears to be playing some of his best golf in recent years. Horschel is also an experienced pro, and will have played many similar venues to Kiawah Island in his time, which could be invaluable here. When you consider he also ranks 20th for SG: Off-the-tee and 28th for SG: Putting in the last three months, he certainly looks over-priced and is worth an each-way bet.
