Kang claims first title as Koepka finds form ahead of PGA defence

Sung Kang was victorious for the first time on the PGA Tour having cooly completed the week with a two-shot gap at the top. Joe Hughes has the lowdown

Byron Nelson report: What happened at Trinity Forest Golf Club?

South Korea’s Sung Kang won his first PGA Tour event with a 2-shot victory over Matt Every and Scott Piercy.

The 31-year-old made the most of his 54-hole lead by shooting 4-under-par on Sunday to win convincingly in his 159th PGA Tour appearance.

Having set himself up nicely for the weekend with an astonishing round of 61 on Friday, his weekend golf, particularly Sunday’s did not disappoint.

With three birdies on the front-nine, Kang looked in control of his game throughout and emphasised his capability to lead the way with three consecutive birdies in the middle of his back-nine.

Kang had already been entered into next week’s major – the PGA Championship – thanks to a withdrawal, but this win will act as a huge confidence booster, for sure.

Furthermore, the victory will see him tee it up at next year’s Players Championship and the Masters as well as pocketing a cool $1.4 million.

Byron Nelson report: Talking point

Following the conclusion of the Byron Nelson, all golfing eyes turn to next week’s event – the PGA Championship.

Being held at Bethpage Black, the second major of the season is set to be fantastic with all of the world’s best talents teeing it up.

Defending champion, Brooks Koepka, was in the field this week and played some very impressive golf on his way to a solo 4th finish.

After a tied 2nd finish at Augusta National last month, and a good performance this week, the American will believe that he has what it takes to add a PGA Championship defence to his US Open defence of last season.

Jordan Spieth also had a decent week ahead of next week’s major as he looks to complete the Grand Slam. The world no.39 finished tied for 29th in his home state of Texas.
