2019 PGA Championship fantasy golf picks

Our Fantasy Golf expert takes a look at who you should put in your team at Bethpage...

Need help with your 2019 PGA Championship fantasy golf picks? Don’t worry, our Fantasy Golf expert is on hand to run down the leading contenders and sleeper picks for the second major of the season.

There isn’t a lot of course form to go by this week with just three events being held at Bethpage since 2009, one of those being the US Open.

However, previous PGA Championships have favoured players who have been in form leading up to the major but with the tournament moving to May there could be a change in trends.

Five out of the previous six winners have finished inside the top 15 in their previous starts before winning the PGA Championship.

Justin Thomas is the anomaly but still managed a good finish before winning his maiden major crown, finishing inside the top 30 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Jason Day has a fantastic record at the PGA Championship and it is a major he has thrived in over the past five years.

The Australian has top 20 finishes in his previous five PGA Championships, one of those being his maiden major title in 2015 at Whistling Straits and has three other top 10 finishes in that period.

As far as course form is concerned, Day carded a top five the last time the PGA Tour rocked up at Bethpage in 2016 at The Barclays.

He will enter the second major of the season coming off the back of a T5 at the Masters and a T24 at Quail Hollow, a former PGA Championship  venue.

Due to Justin Thomas’ late withdrawal due to a wrist injury I’ve had to draft in Jon Rahm at the last minute.

The Spaniard carries good form heading into the second major of the season at Bethpage with top 10s in his previous three starts. One being a victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Ryan Palmer.

Rahm’s tremendous ball striking and length off the tee could be crucial at one of the toughest courses in the USA.

Despite causing a stir with his slow play Patrick Cantlay has been going about his business well on the PGA Tour in recent weeks.

He’ll be making his course debut at Bethpage but comes into the tournament in great form with a fantastic week at the Masters which he backed up with a T3 at the RBC Heritage.

Cantlay is yet to miss a cut in his two PGA Championship appearances and has a good major record since the open with three finishes inside the top 30.

He might not have the best major championship record in recent years but Bubba Watson has enjoyed success at Bethpage in his last three appearances and hasn’t finished outside the top 20 in that time.

However, Bubba’s PGA Championship and major record with seven missed cuts since the start of 2017. His only real success has come at Augusta National where he has recorded top 15s in his last two starts.

Ian Poulter is arguably playing some of the best golf of his career and has been a great option for fantasy teams this season as he as generally been priced pretty low considering his form.

The Englishman missed five majors between 2017 and 2018 but hasn’t looked back since making his return 2017 Open Championship with four top 25s since then, most recently having one of his best weeks at Augusta National.

He continued his good form at the RBC Heritage where he recorded a top 10 finish.

Emiliano Grillo who has a tendency to pop up with good finishes on the PGA Tour.

His record in majors isn’t fantastic but has the occasional good finish with his best PGA finish being a T13 in his PGA Tour rookie season in 2016.

He does however know how to get it around Bethpage and finished runner up to Patrick Reed at The Barclays in 2016.
