North West: Whitehead is club's champ aged just 12

Kendal GC has wrapped up a successful season after the ladies team swept up with a number of trophy victories this year.

Standout performer on the team is Caitlin Whitehead, 12, who has a handicap of five and is unbeaten this season.

She is the club’s reigning champion and also claimed victory in the County Junior Open at Brampton and qualified for the Andalucia Junior European Open.

Whitehead also became the ‘Wee Wonders’ champion at St Andrews, completing the course with a round of 72, and the youngster said: “Kendal Ladies have been very supportive and encouraged me in all competitions. It has been an honour to represent them.

“By giving me this opportunity it has allowed me to grow in confidence and experience golf at a higher level. Most of my matches have been very close, which has challenged my game.”
‘I have thrived under the pressure and have loved every minute of it’ Aided by Whitehead, Kendal’s ladies team won the Westmorland and North West Lancashire Shield, the Westmorland Bronze Shield and the One Day Team Trophy.

The Silver Scratch team was also promoted to the region’s first division and ladies captain Pam Lear said: “We feel that we do a lot for the club so we get respect for that. I’m very proud of what we have achieved this year.”
