Tiger Woods takes aim at LIV Golf following big TGL announcement

Tiger Woods has taken a shot at LIV Golf after Rory McIlroy claimed the Saudi-funded league was ‘in no man’s land’ on Monday…

First, Rory. Then, Tiger.

The masterminds behind TGL have aimed digs at LIV Golf within days of each other.

McIlroy claimed the Saudi-funded league was ‘caught in no man’s land’ and Woods has weighed in by comparing the two start-ups.

“Some of the stuff I’ve seen in LIV… I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on,” he said. “Here it’s very simple.”

Woods first expressed opposition to LIV Golf at the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, claiming players had “turned their backs” on the PGA Tour.

He also called for Greg Norman to step aside as LIV chief executive last November to allow the tour to enter peace talks with its rival league.

The 15-time major champion’s comments came as he announced the formation of the sixth and final TGL Golf team, Jupiter Links Golf Club, which he will own and play for.

Promotion of the new tech-infused, indoor golf series is ramping up ahead of the January 9 start date. Everything you need to know about it can be found here.

“Through its use of technology, TGL is a modern twist of traditional golf and ultimately will make the sport I love more accessible,” Woods said in a statement.

“Having the opportunity to not only compete but also own a team to represent Jupiter is an exciting next chapter for me.

“I expect Jupiter Links GC to showcase the golf culture of my hometown as we compete against the best players in the world.

“Generally, golf takes about five or six hours to play. In today’s world, with all of our smartphones, it is hard for anybody to go five to six hours without looking at their phones,” he added.

“So the shorter the time, the better it is.”

Woods’ TGR Ventures shares leadership of Jupiter Links Golf Club with David Blitzer, the co-founder of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment which is involved with well-known US sports entities including the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils.

His teammates will no doubt be revealed in the coming weeks. McIlroy has been joined by Tyrrell Hatton, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley on Boston Common Golf.

Tiger Woods TGL news: What else did he say?

Woods, now 47 years old, could play for the first time since the Masters next month at the Hero World Challenge – an event he hosts in the Bahamas.

He told the Associated Press on Tuesday his ankle, which was operated on after withdrawing at Augusta, has “absolutely zero issue whatsoever.”

Woods and his son Charlie have also played in the last three PNC Championships together in Florida, a late-year PGA Tour event that allows stars of the game to partner up with a family member.

Footage recently emerged of the golf star caddying for his son at a junior event, leading to speculation of when, or if, he could return to competition.

“I’m pretty sore after caddying for four days,” he said.

“My ankle is fine. Where they fused my ankle, I have absolutely zero issue whatsoever.

“That pain is completely gone. It’s the other areas that have been compensated for.

“But all the surrounding areas is where I had all my problems and I still do. So you fix one, others have to become more hypermobile to get around it, and it can lead to some issues.”
