TGL Golf won’t begin until 2025 due to dome damage

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new venture has been postponed for a year due to the dome of the custom-built arena collapsing…

The start of TGL Golf has been delayed until 2025.

The custom-built dome in Florida deflated due to a failure with the temporary power system and the backup systems used in construction.

No one was injured but the new tech-infused league’s beginning date of January 9 2024, is out of the question.

Images emerged of the custom-built SoFi Centre’s collapsed roof last week which threw the inaugural date of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new venture into doubt.

TGL Golf revealed the postponement until early 2025 in a statement having considered short-term solutions, construction timelines, player schedules and the primetime sports TV calendar.

“I’ve been a believer in TGL, and as the momentum has built this past year, I’m even more excited about what this can become for fans of the game all around the world,” Woods added in the statement.

“Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players.”

“The postponement brings mixed feelings of disappointment and excitement,” McIlroy said. “Above all, we are happy that no one was injured. We are looking forward to the launch of TGL.

“Given the circumstances, while the delay is disappointing, the postponement will allow us to regroup, refocus and return stronger.”

The SoFi Centre is meant to host 1,600 people in Palm Beach Gardens watching a selection of the world’s best players facing off in a unique points-scoring match play format.

Woods and McIlroy were two of 23 players ready to participate in 2024. Jon Rahm was on the original shortlist but recently withdrew due to personal reasons.’

His replacement is yet to be revealed.

McIlroy took part in a press conference with his new Boston Common Golf teammates Adam Scott, Tyrrell Hatton and Keegan Bradley earlier this month to promote the new league.

Woods’ Jupiter Links team was also introduced to the public on November 7 as preparations began to ramp up.

“We support the league’s decision to delay the start of the TGL season, affording the additional flexibility required for the completion of the new venue after last week’s setback,” Fenway Sports Group said in a statement.

“While we eagerly anticipate the debut of our new team, prioritising the operational readiness of the venue is critical. Over the next year, Boston Common Golf will continue to build its following locally and enhance the connection the region has with its four remarkable PGA Tour players.

“While disappointing, this delay will ensure the inaugural season is a highly successful one that allows the league to present the best first look at this new concept.”
