Tommy Fleetwood has become an ambassador for the Hulton Park project in Greater Manchester.

Europe’s Ryder Cup hero from Marco Simone has teamed up with the proposed Bolton-based project that aims to host the event in the near future.

The championship golf course is yet to be built but is part of a plan to increase grassroots golf participation in northwest England, as well as converting hundreds of acres into accessible green spaces.

Fleetwood, who played in his third Ryder Cup last week, is now supporting Hulton Park’s efforts among a group of three English venues aiming to host the matches with the USA.

“I’ve studied the proposals for Hulton closely and seen the site for myself,” Fleetwood said.

“It is an amazing landscape and the prospect of a purpose-built stadium course here would be fantastic for everyone concerned – for golf, for the tournament and for the game in England.

“But perhaps more importantly, I love what this proposal offers to my corner of the country.

“I can see that it would inspire more people in the North West to take up the game and for those who don’t play golf, it will also bringing jobs, investment and tourism to the region and open up a huge new green space for the community.”

The Belfry near Birmingham was the last English venue to host the Ryder Cup in 2002. It has visited Ireland, Wales and Scotland since then as well as travelling to France and Italy.

Peel L&P, the developer of the project, say they will generate £1.6 billion for the economy and has received backing from Bolton Wanderers Football Club and the University of Bolton.

Bolton Council rejected the site’s plans in February, but a public inquiry has since decided the plans shouldn’t have been rejected.

Last December, Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire also launched a bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2031 and 2035.

The London Club in Kent is also believed to be in the running, as well as another unnamed European course.
