Yep, you read that right! World No 1 Nelly Korda recorded a 10 during her opening round at the US Women’s Open!
To make matters even worse, the 10 in question came on a par 3. The American would drop seven shots on the field in just her third hole of the tournament.
The par 3 12th is the signature hole at Lancaster Country Club, and it had already claimed several victims before Korda had reached it.
Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe made a 9, while plenty of others had made at least double bogey. Lydia Ko, following in the group behind Korda, would also make double.
Korda trumped the lot though, with her tee shot going long, followed by knocking three balls into the penalty area. It was somewhat reminiscent of Jordan Spieth‘s Masters meltdown a few years back…

The World No 1 had already had a premonition about the 12th hole at Lancaster, speaking about it earlier in the week.
“From the tee box, you can’t see how sloped of a green that is, but then once you get onto that green you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re coming in with a 6-iron’,” she said.
“If you’re long, in a sense, you’re kind of screwed. If you’re short, you’re screwed, too.”
Korda did go long, and in her own words, she was screwed. Here is the play-by-play of how it all went wrong.
- Shot 1: Tee shot long of the green and into the back bunker
- Shot 2: Bunker shot back across the green and into the penalty area in front of the green
- Shot 3: Penalty
- Shot 4: Pitch shot on to green, spins back into penalty area
- Shot 5: Penalty
- Shot 6: Pitch shot on to green, spins back into penalty area
- Shot 7: Penalty
- Shot 8: Pitch shot past the flag to 9 feet
- Shot 9: Putt misses left, runs to 3 feet
- Shot 10: 3 feet putt sank (finally!)
