What is the LIV Golf Miami Team Championship format?

Match play and stroke play in one tournament? How does the LIV Golf Team Championship work?

This week sees the LIV Golf Miami Team Championship bring the curtain down on the 2023 LIV season but what is the format for the event?

The last tournament of the LIV Golf season brings in a mixture of match play and stroke play, as the teams battle it out for a share of the $50 million purse.

The Blue Monster at Trump National Doral Golf will play host to the competition, which will take place over three days, like a normal LIV Golf event.

How are the teams seeded?

The teams will be seeded from 1 to 12 based on their position in the overall season standings for the 2023 campaign.

Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces GC will be the #1 seed after finishing the season with 192 points, and topping the standings.

Crushers GC, led by Bryson DeChambeau, will be the #2 seed, with Joaquin Niemann’s Torque GC and Bubba Watson’s Range Goats GC rounding out the top four.

The standings after LIV Golf Jeddah

1 – 4Aces GC (Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Pat Perez, Peter Uihlein)
2 – Crushers GC (Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Anirban Lahiri, Charles Howell III)

The format for the LIV Golf Miami Team Championship

Like all LIV Golf events, the competition will run over three days.

However, this week will see two days of head-to-head match play, before a stroke play round on Sunday to determine the overall winner of the LIV Golf Team Championship.

The match-play section

Those teams in the top four will not play on Friday. Thanks to their performances over the course of the season, they will receive a bye on the opening day and go straight into the semi-finals.

Teams seeded 5-12 will face off in a match-play format on the opening day. Those ranked from 5 to 8 will have a choice of who they play from the teams ranked 9 to 12 with Stinger GC, the #5 seed, picking first.

Each contest will consist of three matches; two singles matches and one foursomes match. This means all four players from each team will play.

All 32 players in action will compete simultaneously in a shotgun start at Trump National Doral.

All three matches must come to a conclusion, with extra holes being played if a match is tied after 18. The team that wins each contest will advance to the semi-finals.

The same pattern occurs on Saturday, with teams seeded 1 through 4 choosing who they want to play.

The winners of those four contests will qualify for Sunday’s Finals.

Stroke-Play Sunday

Sunday will see the competition revert back to a stroke-play format, with all 48 players teeing off simultaneously in a shotgun start.

There will be three mini-leagues to determine the overall finishing position for the LIV Golf Team Championship.

The teams that lose in Friday’s match-play contests will battle it out for positions 9 to 12. The four teams that lose in Saturday’s contests will play for positions 5 through 8.

The winners of Saturday’s semi-finals will battle it out for the top spot, positions 1 through 4. The team in this bracket with the lowest accumulative score from their four players will be crowned the 2023 LIV Golf Team Champions.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
