
There’s a new twist in the LIV Golf world rankings debacle as reports emerge of a “strategic alliance” with the MENA Tour.
LIV Golf’s stars had previously said they would play tournaments on the Asian Tour – another circuit with which LIV is closely aligned – in order to gain points. But this move could see points available at LIV events.
As first reported by The Telegraph’s James Corrigan, Greg Norman has requested confirmation from the Official World Golf Ranking’s board that this week’s event in Bangkok will see players earn points – a vital cog in the wheel of qualifying for majors – as it is now part of the MENA Tour, a developmental circuit that holds events in the Middle East and North Africa.
It would mean LIV events in the revamped 2023 schedule would also be part of the MENA Tour, which has been a member of OWGR since 2016.
“We are adamant that it ticks most if not all of the OWGR boxes. We do not know how they can exclude us now the LIV Golf Series and next year’s LIV Golf League is on the MENA Tour,” a LIV source told the Telegraph.
The MENA Tour later confirmed the news in a statement of their own, announcing that all LIV Golf players have now officially joined the league.
But within 24 hours, OWGR had responded. And it wasn’t good news for LIV…
