‘What future does he have?’ Player rips into Smith after LIV switch
It seems everyone in the golf world has been on the Cameron Smith offensive after his sensational switch to LIV Golf, so of course one of the league’s biggest critics, Gary Player, wasn’t going to bite his tongue either.
In arguably the most scathing attack yet, Player has gone all on in Smith and LIV Golf, ripping into the Open champion on BBC 5 Live for damaging his future following the move.
“Here’s a young man I really thought was going to be a superstar,” Player said of the World No 2. “Now what sort of future does he have? Will he be able to realise this great dream of being a champion? I don’t know.
“I don’t blame [Henrik] Stenson for going. He had no money, so he had to go. But this is a potential superstar. I think his advisors have given him the wrong advice.”
Player, who has rarely been shy to voice his opinion on LIV Golf, also took yet another stab at the breakaway league itself, bashing its format while damming that it will never match the level of the PGA Tour.
“How can you ever be a champion playing a tour with 54 holes and no cut?” he continued. “What sort of tour is that? 54 holes? No cut? A team event nobody understands. It’s a tour for people who don’t have confidence in their future. They don’t have the confidence they can be winners.
“It’s never going to compare to the regular tour. No chance.”
A quick reminder that Player is sponsored by Golf Saudi, and remains an advocate of the country which continues to fund LIV Golf.
