It’s official. After weeks of rumours and awkward hints, LIV Golf have confirmed the signing of Cameron Smith along with five other new additions.
Smith joins LIV just six weeks after winning The Open at St Andrews, marking what is undoubtably the breakaway league’s biggest acquisition yet.
Although it was the inevitable news the golfing world were all prepared for – given Smith’s continued refusal to rebuke the rumours ever since hoisting the Claret Jug – the whole narrative still represents a stunning series of events given Smith is the current Champion Golfer of the Year, the Players champion, and World No 2.
The Open champion is expected to make his LIV debut this week in Boston, where he will join a host of other major winners including Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau.
Confirmed alongside Smith is fellow Aussie Marc Leishman, as well Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Tringale, Harold Varner III and Aniban Lahiri – who will all now be banned indefinitely by the PGA Tour following their controversial switch.
“LIV Golf is showing the world that our truly global league is attracting the world’s best players and will grow the game into the future for the next generation,” said Greg Norman, CEO. “The best and the brightest continue to embrace the excitement and energy of LIV Golf and what we’re building – a tangible league for team golf that will connect with new audiences all over the globe.”
