Smith pulls out of PGA Tour event as LIV move beckons
Just when we thought Cam Smith had provided all the ammunition possible to suggest he’s joining LIV Golf, the Aussie has enticed speculation even further by sensationally withdrawing from the BMW Championship.
As confirmed by PGA Tour Communications, Smith will not feature in the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs in Wilmington due to ongoing “hip discomfort”, an issue his agent claims has been bothering the Open champion for several months.
The news comes off the back of a chaotic week for Smith, who riled up speculation with hint after hint he would be joining LIV before then finding himself entangled in rules drama with the PGA Tour after breaching a relief violation.
Unsurprisingly, the latest announcement has sent the world of golf into further disarray, with a plethora of commenters believing the withdrawal signals Smith’s farewell to the PGA Tour…

Despite the drama, it is worth noting the withdrawal is by no means a surprise given Smith’s standings in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Aussie currently sits in third place – only behind Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler – meaning his qualification for the tournament’s lucrative Tour Championship is now confirmed.
With that in mind, one would expect Smith to make a swift recovery in time for the season finale – which succeeds the BMW Championship on August 25. But with the inevitable LIV switch also looming, whether Smith does return to action remains to be seen for now.
