In 2024, it was Dean Burmester who picked up the lion’s share of the prize fund by winning at Trump National Doral.
The Stingers GC team member and South African beat European legend Sergio Garcia in a playoff, after both players finished 11-under-par on the Blue Monster, to win $4 million. The players will be playing for the same winner’s cheque in 2025.
Burmester needed two extra holes to claim victory, but what Garcia felt in disappointment might’ve been made up for in his bank account. The former Masters champion won $2.25 million for coming runner-up, which is as much a sign of the current financial climate in the game as the winner’s prize itself.
As with each LIV Golf event, the purse for the 2025 LIV Golf Miami event will be $25 million. $20 million is put aside for the individual pot and $5 million is distributed among the top three teams: $3 million for the winning team, $1.5 million for the runner-up and the final $500,000 for the third-placed team.
In 2024 in Miami, Legion XIII won the team event by one shot from the RangeGoats. Burmester’s Stingers came third and banked $125,000 each which, as NCG understands it, gets invested back into the team pot.
The winning members of Legion XIII were given $750,000 each, while the RangeGoats each earned $375,000. Even though the prize money is the same at each LIV event, the numbers don’t become less mind-boggling.
LIV Golf Miami arrives one week before the Masters this year, in the same week as the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour. The Valero Texas Open was won by Akshay Bhatia in 2024. The young American won $1,656,000 in the process and as the prize money has narrowly increased to $9,500,000 this year, the winner will likely receive a similar figure.
The LIV Golf event dwarfs the Texas event on the PGA Tour, with more than double the prize money. You could say this was precisely the point of LIV Golf’s introduction into the golf world – to one-up the PGA Tour and attract top players with larger financial rewards.
