  • Ian woosnam: bronte law was ‘like a duck to water’

Bronte Law’s struggles in 2023 suddenly became a distant memory in Morocco.

Her three-shot win at the Lalla Meryem Cup at the end of February was her third Ladies European Tour title, and her first in two years.

Having missed the cut 11 times during her LPGA Tour campaign last year, Law sought inspiration from a Masters champion and European Ryder Cup legend.

Ian Woosnam is hosting an event on the Legends Tour in May at Apes Hill in Barbados – a country Law has regularly visited in previous years.

After picking the brains of the former World No.1, Law rediscovered how to return to the winner’s circle and attributed much of her success at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam to the man himself.

“I was really struggling and I was not sure which way to turn or who to look to for help. I always go to Barbados for a month. I’m lucky enough to often play with Woosie when I’m over there,” she told the LET Golf Podcast.

“I’ve got to know him now over probably seven or eight years of going there every year. He really took a huge amount of time, probably three or four weeks, each day, to help me out. He tried to mentor and guide me.

“The amount of time that he dedicated towards helping me was incredible. I feel extremely lucky to have had that opportunity. I can’t really thank him enough, for not only being a good friend, but for sharing with me all those experiences he’s had over the years.

“He’s advised me moving forward how best he would best prepare. What he’s experienced in his career. It was just so much information and so much advice.

“I felt like I came away from that really motivated and really positive. I trained as hard as I could and probably had the best off-season in terms of where my game was. Pairing that with my mental coach (Karl Morris) and coach Richard (Green), it felt like I was back in a position where I could win again. It just meant putting into practice the work I had done mentally in order to do that.”

Ian Woosnam: Bronte Law was ‘like a duck to water’

Woosnam, the winner of 52 professional titles and the coveted Green Jacket in 1991, took great pride in seeing Law secure victory under his stewardship.

The 28-year-old from Stockport is just another success story in Woosnam’s newfound role as a golf mentor, as he also oversaw Welshman Jack Davidson’s ascension to the DP World Tour via Q-School back in November.

Law’s first breakthrough in the professional game came in 2019 when she won the Pure Silk Championship on the LPGA Tour. She backed this up with wins at the Dubai Moonlight Classic and the Aramco Team Series London in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Her record in 2023 represented a significant downturn in fortunes and Woosnam revealed what he aimed to ingrain her swing to help her return to past glories.

“I said to her, if we’re going to do this, let’s do it properly and fair play to her, she worked really hard. We played a lot together – her swing was there but she just wasn’t putting it in the right motion,” Woosnam told NCG.

“She wasn’t getting the power in her swing, so I said to her, you’re not the biggest, you’ve got to learn to swing it this way, so you’ve spent a lot of time just improving her action and her strike on the ball and the way she moves through the ball and her attack angle. She was like a duck to water really; it didn’t take her long to do it.

“The trouble with Bronte I think is she all of sudden was hitting the ball further and she was finding it hard to control her distance. I spoke to her a couple of times and I said, just be patient and it will come and the first week, she didn’t do too good, she kept going over the greens all the time.

“She just stuck in there in the third round and the second round and in the last round, everything came together and it’s great to see someone you’ve been looking after and mentoring coming through and winning in that style.”
