We talk to the Woburn teenager about turning pro

Interview: Five minutes with Lauren Taylor

“Winning the British Amateur is one of my greatest achievements, especially to do it at Royal Portrush with my dad on the bag. It was really special. I was very proud to become the youngest ever winner.

“Being awarded BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2011 was probably the best night of my life. It was a big thrill to mix with stars like Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Darren Clarke. I’ve never been so nervous making a speech though!

“I really enjoyed my time at Baylor (Texas) – it’s a  great university with a great team. But after my freshman year I decided that I wanted to focus on turning professional.

“I played my first LET access event recently and winning was just the start I wanted! I had my sister on the bag which was really nice. It has given me a lot of confidence heading into my last few events.

“I’m only playing in professional events before tour school, so I decided to turn pro as I had no plans to stay amateur if I didn’t get my card. I have worked hard this summer and my ambition has always been to be a professional golfer.

“I wouldn’t say I have a best mate on tour – I just have a lot of really good friends. I know quite a few players on the LET and other amateurs that are turning professional this year so it will be nice to see everyone.

“I’ve enjoyed my time as an amateur. I’ve had some great successes and have loved representing England and Europe in team events.”

  • Lauren Taylor won the British Amateur Championship when she was just 16, and was subsequently awarded the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year title in 2011. She recently became only the third amateur to win on the LET Access Series and will attempt to qualify for the full LET at the end of the year.
