Georgia Hall ‘can’t get her head around’ Nelly Korda’s dominance

Georgia Hall “can’t get her head” around Nelly Korda’s current dominance of women’s golf.

The Englishwoman and former Open champion texted Korda ahead of last month’s JM Eagle LA Championship to thank her for withdrawing, affording the rest of the world a chance of victory given the rate at which the American is picking up trophies.

Korda has won six times in her last seven LPGA Tour events including a second major title at the Chevron Championship. The 25-year-old is currently the undisputed queen at the top of the Rolex Rankings having overtaken Lilia Vu earlier this year.

Although Hall is one of many competitors falling victim to Korda’s brilliance in 2024, the significance of this period is not lost on the 28-year-old from Bournemouth who heaped praise on the eyes and the coverage that Korda is attracting to the women’s golf sphere.

“I think it’s fantastic. I know her quite well, and she’s such a good player and (has) a great mentality, and I think it’s just fantastic for the women’s game, what she’s doing on and off the golf course, and providing way more audience and the media coverage it’s giving,” Hall said.

“I know the amount of people that tuned in to watch her win at Chevron, the first major because it was all with – what’s his name? (Scottie Scheffler) He’s done the same thing – I just think it’s great for women’s golf. In a way I hope it continues like that because it’s just amazing to see. I just can’t get my head around it, really, either. Six out of seven is just unbelievable.”

Korda’s most recent victory came at the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National, narrowly seeing off Australain Hannah Green by one shot. She became the first player since Inbee Park in 2013 to win six times in one season and she is the first American to do this since Beth Daniel in 1990.

She is also just the eighth player since 1980 to win six or more times in a year and the 25-year-old also tied Annika Sorenstam as the fastest player to win six titles since 1980.

As Korda blazes her trail on the LPGA Tour, she is becoming more and more involved in the same sentences as the likes of Sorenstam, a Swede who won 10 major titles and is regarded as one of the best female golfers to have lived.

Much like Scottie Scheffler’s grasp on the PGA Tour, anticipation surrounds Korda every week she is entered. Fans wait and expect more history to be made and more records to be broken and despite Hall and her colleagues maintaining their own competitive fire, she believes what we they see now can only be a good thing for women’s golf.

“I think people are already thinking that. But golf is a funny game. I mean, players every year are just so up and down, and one week she’s like that — I don’t know what’s going to happen the next six months, but if you’re coming down the stretch with her, I think for me, it would be like, wow, even if I can come down the stretch against her, I’d literally just want to win even more, I think.

“Like she’s playing so well. But like I say, I think it’s just great for the game in general.”

“Although we obviously want to win more than anything, for her to keep winning like she is, it’s just doing great things for us anyway, and to promote the tournaments and the Tour in general and to make people more aware of where we are this week and what we’re doing,” she added. “It’s only going to be a positive.”
