The former Open Champion has only had a handful of caddies since turning professional, and has had the same one since the end of 2023

Shane Lowry made the hire of Darren Reynolds to be his full-time caddie at the back end of 2023. The Irishman had just parted ways with previous bagman Brian ‘Bo’ Martin, after five years together.

Reynolds, however, joined the ranks with Lowry after previously looping with the likes of Paul McGinley, Paul Dunne and Antoine Rozner on the DP World Tour. Reynolds accompanied Rozner to two tour wins in Dubai and Qatar between 2020 and 2021.

Reynolds, who is Lowry’s compatriot, became the Irishman’s third caddie since he turned pro back in 2009. Lowry first worked with Dermot Byrne before turning to the aforementioned Martin in 2018. The pair had a special connection, and Bo helped Lowry earn his maiden major championship in his home country of Ireland back in 2019 at Royal Portrush.

Lowry was also victorious in 2019 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and then the 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The duo split towards the end of 2023.

Reynolds’ full-time debut on the bag of Lowry was at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2024, in which the former Champion Golfer of the Year missed the cut. Lowry admitted that the change of personnel was hard for him to get used to at first.

“That week in Phoenix was a bit weird for me, and I felt a bit different.

“But frankly, he was one of the few options I had, and we just had a chat. He caddied for me during Covid for a few weeks and yeah, it’s been going pretty good.”

After that subpar outing at the Waste Management, Lowry secured consecutive top-five finishes at the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, which were initial signs that the partnership with Reynolds was beginning to click.

In April of 2024, Reynolds and Lowry partnered with Rory McIlroy and his bagman Harry Diamond at the Zurich Classic and came out victorious in a playoff. The Irish quarter had clear chemistry, and it was Reynolds’ first win on the bag for Lowry.

Lowry then went on to finish in a tie for sixth at the PGA Championship at Valhalla in which he shot a record-tying low major round of 62 on the Saturday.

At the Open Championship in July at Royal Troon, Lowry contended again, this time ending in solo sixth with the calming Reynolds proving to be an adequate laxative to the sometimes fiery Lowry.

The 38-year-old began 2025 with a runner-up finish to close friend McIlroy at Pebble Beach, which was supposed to set the precedent for the year ahead.

But he and Reynolds struggled to follow that up in the big events. The golfer from Mullingar missed two of the four cuts in the 2025 majors, and his best finish was a tie for 40th at the Open Championship back at Portrush.

Nonetheless, Lowry was picked for the 2025 Ryder Cup team by captain Luke Donald for Bethpage Black as a spearhead of the dressing room due to his energetic persona. It is well-documented that Lowry lives for the Ryder Cup, and in his third appearance at the event, Shane, alongside Reynolds, went undefeated in three matches, winning one and tying two.

But significantly, Lowry delivered the half point in Sunday Singles that ensured Europe would retain the cup. He birdied three of the final four holes against Russell Henley, including a 7-footer on the last to tie the match and secure the necessary half point, sparking a wild celebration on the 18th green.

Since his debut at Whistling Straits, Lowry now had an overall record of 3-3-3 at the Ryder Cup through 2025, but is undoubtedly a lynchpin and leader for the European team. And Reynolds is instrumental to Lowry and his success, so the latter will be hoping that their display on Long Island will eventually extrapolate to the majors.
