American Russell Henley has had Andrew Sanders on the bag since 2022. The Georgia man has gone through his fair share of caddies since he turned professional in 2011, including Adam Hayes, who is now on the bag for Jon Rahm, as well as Todd Gjesvold.

Sanders partnered with Henley three years ago after previously accompanying Jimmy Walker, including during his 2016 PGA Championship victory at Baltusrol.

Despite now being a caddie, Sanders was an impressive golfer himself. He played college golf at the University of Houston and also qualified for the 2000 US Open at just 20 years of age.

Sadly, his playing career came to an abrupt end due to some medical issues, but he was able to redefine his relationship with the game of golf through caddying on tour.

Russell noted how his bagman’s calming influence helps him to stay focused.

“He reads situations well and gives me the one-word answers that instil confidence under pressure.”

Russell Henley caddie is a major winner himself

Henley himself is known by fans and fellow tour members as an even-keeled individual whose demeanour rarely changes on the course. His precise iron play has long been the calling card used to excel on the PGA Tour.

In total, Russell has five tour triumphs, with the most recent one coming with Sanders on the bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in 2025. In a tightly contested final round, Henley chased Collin Morikawa down the stretch, supplemented by a chip-in eagle on the 16th, which propelled him to victory.

Sanders’ influence would certainly have been a factor in successfully hunting down Morikawa after being three back with five to play in this Signature Event.

In his first season on the PGA Tour, Henley became the first rookie in 12 years to win on his debut, which was at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January of 2013.

Despite being on tour for over a decade now, Henley’s major record is somewhat lacklustre, but he has seemingly improved with age and Sanders has evidently enhanced this. In 2025, the Georgia Bulldog finished tied for 10th in both the US Open and The Open, although he did miss the cut at the PGA and the Masters.

Overall, Russ has five total top 10s in 44 major appearances through 2025. The now 36-year-old did however make his Ryder Cup debut at Bethpage Black. Qualifying on points due to a consistent year, Henley was paired with World No.1 Scottie Scheffler. Russell himself has been as high as third in the OWGR, but the once formidable duo did not deliver for the USA, losing both of their foursomes matches.

Some discourse on the Friday pointed to the duo taking the wrong tee shots, which was only brought up by Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott afterwards, with the error rectified the following morning. To no avail though as they were again beaten by the Europeans.

Henley went up against Shane Lowry in the Sunday Singles but tied his match after being two up with four to play. This included a putt on the last to win the match that he left short.

It was a disappointing showing from Henley, who leans on caddie Sanders heavily to navigate the course. And despite Henley being in the back half of his playing career, he and Sanders have forged a coherent connection that gives Russell the best chance to continue to compete at the highest level in the sport.
