DP World Tour threatens punishment for entering LIV Golf qualifying

Although the PGA Tour has allowed members to compete in LIV Golf’s Q-school, the DP World Tour has taken a different route…

DP World Tour players could be banned for competing in LIV Golf Promotions.

The tour told players in a memo they could also be fined for playing in a “conflicting event” falling in the same week as the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Players had to apply in writing by November 8 for a release to compete in LIV’s version of Q-school worth $1.5 million, first reported by The Times.

The tour provided NCG with the notice that was sent to the membership:

“Please be advised that the Alfred Dunhill Championship taking place between 7-10 December 2023 is the Approved Tournament (as defined in the Regulations) on the DP World Tour during that week.

“If you take up membership for the 2024 Official Season in Categories 1-21 and wish to play in any tournament other than the Alfred Dunhill Championship (and which is therefore a Conflicting Tournament as defined in the Regulations), then, in accordance with the Regulations and unless one of the stated exceptions applies, you must apply in writing for a release to play in that Conflicting Tournament by not later than 8 November 2023.”

The tour wouldn’t disclose the number of releases that have been requested.

The tour’s warning arrived just days after the PGA Tour, with which it shares a strategic alliance, said it would allow members to compete in the 72-hole event in Abu Dhabi beginning on December 8.

LIV’s new pathway has not been deemed an “unauthorised tournament” by the US circuit so that players may participate without repercussions.

The formerly-named European Tour won an arbitration hearing in April, meaning several players were fined $100,000 for playing in LIV events.

This led to high-profile players such as Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter resigning.

The winner of LIV Golf Promotions will earn $200,000 and the top three on the leaderboard will earn spots on the LIV Golf 2024 schedule.

The DP World Tour-LIV Golf rivalry continues, but what is this new Q-school?

LIV Golf Promotions will be held across three days with 18 holes played on day one, 18 on day two and 36 on day three.

Round one’s criteria allow a wide range of players to enter from members of the 2023 Walker Cup teams to players at the top of the money list of the Japan Golf Tour, Korean Tour, Sunshine Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia.

Ryder Cup stars, PGA Tour winners and major champions, plus those who were relegated from LIV in 2023, can enter in round two.

The top three players earn $200,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively, while the rest of the top 10 earn spots in the International Series on the Asian Tour.
