2023 Open de Espana: Everything you need to know

Here is your all-rounder guide to the 2023 Open de Espana at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid…

 

Home favourite Jon Rahm will be in action at this week’s 2023 acciona Open de España in Madrid alongside his Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose. The Spaniard is looking to make it four wins in five years at the tournament.

It will be the first time Rose and Rahm will be teeing it up in a tournament since their heroics in Rome that helped Europe defeat USA in the Eternal City.

When is the 2023 Open de Espana?

This year’s Open de Espana will be played between October 12 and 15, 2023.

The tournament is the first of two DP World Tour events to be played in Spain with the Andalucia Masters to follow next week.

Where is the Open de Espana played?

The tournament is played at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, located around 5km from the centre of the Spanish capital city. The course is a par-71 measuring 7,112 yards.

Who is the defending champion?

2023 Open de Espana

Jon Rahm is the defending champion of the tournament and is looking to win his fourth Open de Espana, having also won the tournament in 2018 and 2019.

Two of the Spaniard’s wins at the tournament have come at this week’s venue Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Who is in the field?

Rose and Rahm headline this year’s tournament and are the outright favourites for the torunament.

Other notable players include Joost Luiten, Yannick Paul, and DP World Tour legend Thomas Bjorn.

The tournament prize purse has been set at $3.25 million, with the winner receiving $552,500.

UK viewers will be able to enjoy the action from Spain across various channels on Sky Sports Golf, the schedule is as follows:

Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
