Who is Michael Greller, the man who has been on Jordan Spieth’s bag since 2011?

player impact program 2022

Who is Jordan Spieth‘s caddie Michael Greller? Let’s get to know the looper of the three-time major champion.

Jordan Speith caddie: Who is Michael Greller?

Michael Greller was born in 1978 in Grand Haven, Michigan. He has two siblings, a brother named Tom, and a sister named Katie. Greller attended George Fox University where he graduated in 2003 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

Before working as a caddie, Greller was a middle-school maths teacher, employed at Narrows View Intermediate School in Seattle, Washington. To pursue his interest in golf, and earn some extra money, Greller would caddie for friends during his free time.

In 2006, Greller caddied for one of his close friends at the US Amateur Public Links Championship. Four years later, Greller joined hands with Justin Thomas as his looper for the 2010 US Amateur.

The now two-time major winner was so impressed with the maths teacher that he referred him to Jordan Spieth for the 2011 US Junior Amateur. The Texan would be victorious in the tournament, resulting in him calling on Greller again when Spieth played at the 2012 US Open.

When Spieth eventually turned professional in 2013, Greller took on the Texan’s bag on a one-year, temporary basis. However, such was Spieth’s meteoric rise during 2013 – becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since 1931 after winning the John Deere Classic – that Greller would continue caddying full-time for him from then onwards.

Spieth and Greller have since become one of the most formidable partnerships in world golf. In 2015, the pair enjoyed their most successful season to date, winning The Masters at Augusta and the US Open at Chambers Bay – a course that Greller knew particularly well having caddied there during his teaching years.

The two would then share an iconic moment en route to Spieth winning The Open in 2017 at Royal Birkdale. After the Texan hit his tee shot towards some tour trucks on Sunday, Grellar was instrumental in guiding his employer to get out of trouble before hoisting the Claret Jug for his first and only time.

“We took our time getting the line, getting the number,” Greller said of the odd situation which took 21 minutes to unfold. “He thought it was about 270 , I thought it was 230, so that was alarming.”

Spieth said: “He was very adamant about what club to hit, and it gave me the confidence to hit it, because sometimes when that happens I’ll still go with what I think. But he was right on.”

Despite going four years without a win after that, Greller remained on Spieth’s bag, caddying for the fan favourite in several Ryder Cup and President Cup victories.

Spieth broke his winless streak at the 2021 Valero Texas Open and followed this up with victory at the RBC Heritage in 2022 as well.

Aside from caddying for Jordan, Greller is happily married and is a father of one. His wife Ellie Greller is a former Kindergarten teacher, and the couple were married in 2013 at Chambers Bay.
