The PGA Tour announced an abundance of new initiatives towards the end of the 2022 season – one of them was TGL.

The concept was masterminded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and their company TMRW Sports. The new golf league launched a partnership with the PGA Tour, which provides an alternative fan experience with an interactive, technology-inspired arena never seen before in the sport.

So what do you want to know? Let’s dive in…

What is TGL Golf?

TGL is a tech-infused golf league that shows team matches in a custom-built arena in America. Each event complements the PGA Tour schedule as part of the partnership.

The new league was founded in August 2022, in the same month that Woods, McIlroy and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley formed TMRW Sports, a company that is focused on producing technology-based ventures in the world of sports and entertainment.

What teams are there in TGL Golf and who is playing?

In May 2025, it was announced that Motor City Golf Club would be the newest team joining TGL in 2027, representing Detroit and including owners from both the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos.

Atlanta Drive GC (Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover, Chris Gotterup, Corey Conners)

Boston Common Golf (Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Michael Thorbjornsen)

Los Angeles Golf Club (Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood)

New York Golf Club (Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick)

The Bay Golf Club (Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark)

Jupiter Links Golf Club (Max Homa, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, Tiger Woods)

Who won TGL?

Atlanta Drive beat New York in the first-ever TGL finals in 2025. In the final, which is a best-of-three match format, Atlanta won 6-5 and 4-3 to take the Sofi Cup.

What does TGL Golf stand for?

TGL stands for Tomorrow’s Golf League. The name comes from TMRW Sports – the company behind the new initiative founded by Woods, McIlroy and McCarley.

What about women’s golfers?

In early January 2025, the LPGA and TMRW Sports announced the formation of WTGL, which will feature women’s teams across the 2026/2027 winter.

Jeeno Thitikul, Charley Hull, Lydia Ko, Brooke Henderson, and Lexi Thompson were revealed as the first batch of players to commit to WTGL.

How to watch TGL Golf?

It was announced on October 5 2023, that TGL and ESPN signed a multi-year partnership to make ESPN the home of the matches in the States. Shortly after Christmas 2024, Sky Sports was revealed as the UK broadcaster of TGL.

How much do TGL Golf tickets cost?

Single-match tickets start at $145, but can go much higher on Ticketmaster.

How does TGL Golf work?

There are six teams of four PGA Tour players. There are 15 regular-season matches, which are followed by semi-finals and finals.

Each TGL match features three players competing for each team in a modern match-play format.

The format can be read into three key parts:

Modern Match Play:

Each hole has a value of 1 point and the team with the fewest shots on a hole wins the point. Ties are worth 0 points and there are no carryovers.

Within a match, there will be two sessions played in two different formats:

Session 1 – 9 holes of “Triples” – Three vs. three, team alternate-shot format.

Session 2 – 6 holes of “Singles” – One-on-one, head-to-head competition, with each player playing two holes during the session.

Overtime – If tied at the end of regulation, similar to a soccer penalty shootout, players compete head-to-head until a team successfully hits two shots closer to the pin than their competitors.

Regular Season Point System:

Similar to professional hockey, TGL will use a points-based system for regular season matches.

Win in Regulation – 2 points

Win in Overtime – 2 points

Loss in Overtime – 1 point

Loss in Regulation – 1 point

Post Season:

The top four teams will advance to the playoffs which will include single-elimination semifinals and a “best-of-three” Championship Series.

Shot clock:

The shot clock will display a countdown of 40 seconds in which each player must hit their shot, or their team will receive a shot clock violation and incur a one-stroke penalty.

The 40-second timeframe is based on a former USGA Local Rule and a current USGA Recommendation on pace of play.

Hammer

At the start of TGL, there was one hammer that only one team could hold. If one team had the hammer, they could throw it at any point during a hole, and if the team threw the hammer, the other team could choose to accept it or decline it.

If they accepted it, the hole was worth two points instead of one. If it was declined, they lost the hole and lost a point. The team that used the hammer lost it, so the other team got it the next time, regardless of whether it was accepted.

For the matches starting the week of February 17, new hammer rules gave each team three hammers. They can throw them at any point but only one per hole. Therefore, the leading team can’t prevent the other team from getting the hammer when they need it desperately.

Is there anything else like TGL Golf?

This is certainly the first time a full-on league with world-class layers has been made in the simulator world.

But innovations seen in the TGL league, such as moving slopes on artificial greens, can be found in other quarters, such as with Platform Golf.

Putting green technology is the subject of Platform Golf’s ethos. Platform Golf uses cutting-edge technology to have players hit putts on a tilting green and hit approach shots from uneven lies.

The surfaces can be controlled by the user to recreate any situation encountered by any green. The practicality and value are of no end for coaches such as Claude Harmon III, one of the best coaches in the business, who has now become an ambassador for Platform Golf.

“These platforms allow us, as coaches, to teach situations that couldn’t usually be replicated away from the golf course – skills like putting on real greens and shooting from uneven lies. It’s a game changer no matter the ability level of golfer using it,” Harmon said.
