It was an ambitious project by any stretch – the decision to up sticks and leave a layout that had been beloved for 125 years. But Royal Norwich had become wedged in at their former Hellesdon home and yearned for wider pastures.

They found them around 10 miles down the road at The Weston Estate and architect Ross McMurray took acreage that contained a 400-year-old woodland and supercharged it.

It’s a truly fabulous setting, the mature Scots pines and ancient trees combined with the European Golf Design chief’s trademark bunkering and contoured greens to provide a course that’s meant to be fun for all golfers.

Not that it can’t pack a punch when required. Royal Norwich can stretch past 7,200 yards from the back tees but five options, the shortest of which comes in at 5,339, shows the intent to cater for all.

That ethos isn't only found in the various yardages, either. Landing areas from the tee are generally generous but those gaps can narrow considerably the closer you get to the green. And those putting surfaces are adventurous. Some of them look incredibly sloped but the breaks and run offs really come into play when a shot isn’t correctly struck. Find the preferred angle from your tee shot and hit the right iron and you’ll find the space for your ball to come to rest.

There are plenty of holes too that will be lodged in the memory when you leave. McMurray somehow saw a par 3 though thick foliage where no one else would have dreamed of constructing one and the 2nd is a lovely short shot to a large green that falls away severely from every side if you’re shot.

The succeeding par 5, with its green at the summit of a gentle rise and set among some fabulous tree specimens, is picturesque as well as a test and Royal Norwich builds from there. You'd happily find the 8th at any Surrey course and the extreme dogleg of the 13th is only bettered by a 47-yard green that will see any four gratefully welcomed.

It culminates in a par 3 17th which is genuinely arresting to play. Stretching to 164 yards off the back tees, the huge lake, angled green, and clever bunkering means a good score is never assured.

While NCG Top 100s rankings may only consider the golf course, no picture of Royal Norwich is complete without mentioning the stunning clubhouse – a venue that, with its micro-brewery and modern dining areas, feels more like a restaurant than an after-golf watering hole.

Hospitality is a huge part of the experience at Royal Norwich and impressive practice facilities, and a six-hole Academy course, also means there’s far more on offer than just the traditional 18-hole option.
