Barnham Broom | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Barnham Broom is tucked away in East Anglia, and one of four venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list to be based in Norfolk. There is plenty on offer at Barnham, with two championship golf courses along with stunning practice facilities, a beautiful hotel and luxury lodges, and a health and fitness club with its own spa.

When it comes to golf, Barnham Broom has you covered. The two courses – the Hill Course and the Valley Course – were both designed by world-renowned golf course architects. Frank Pennink was the man to create the Valley Course, which opened in 1977. 12 years later, the Hill Course – designed by the great Donald Steel – opened at Barnham Broom. The two offer vastly different challenges, while there is also a three-hole Academy Course, driving range and short game area for golfers to practice on prior to taking on either of the two 18-hole layouts.

Golf is not the only sport on offer at Barnham Broom, with both tennis and squash courts available as part of The Edge Health & Fitness Club. Both racket sports are available for hotel guests and fitness club members, while The Edge also has a fully equipped gym and a swimming pool. There is also a sauna and steam room, which are used by guests of the spa as well. Spa treatments include massages, facial treatments, manicures, pedicures and much more, all given by qualified professionals.

At the end of the day, you’ll want to rest your head, and there is plenty of choice for you when it comes to accommodation at Barnham. The hotel has a variety of rooms, including Standard and Superior, along with Junior Suites. The top of the range in the hotel are the suites named after the two golf courses – the Hill Suite and the Valley Suite. There is also a range of six lodges that provide a more private stay for larger groups, offering a self-catering experience at Barnham Broom.

Barnham Broom Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Two Contrasting Championship Courses

Like many of the venues you will find on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, Barnham Broom is blessed to hold two golf courses. The Hill and Valley Courses offer vastly different challenges, thanks to two world-renowned golf course architects – Donald Steel designing the Hill Course, and Frank Pennink being the man behind the Valley Course.

Valley Course
The Valley Course was the first offering when it comes to golf at Barnham Broom. Designed by Frank Pennink, the course opened in 1977 and within a decade, the European PGA Satellite Tour was hosting events on the course. The Par 72 layout runs at more than 6,500 yards from the back tees, while the yellows see the course play at less than 6,300 yards.

The Valley is a stern test of golf for even the most experienced players. It is littered with water hazards and begins with a strong par 5 on the northern edge of the property. The hardest hole on the course comes early on at the 3rd, prior to the opening par 3 on the course. Both 7 and 15 are short par 3s, no more than 140 yards each, while the 12th could be seen as drivable at only 300 yards from the back tees. 10 and 13 are par 5s measuring less than 500 yards, and therefore scorable opportunities, while the final hole on the Valley Course is only 350 yards and throws up one last birdie chance.

Hill Course
The Hill Course was designed by Donald Steel, famous for being behind the redesigns of some world-class golfing venues – including Royal St George’s and The Machrie. The Hill is around 30 yards longer than the Valley Course, but at less than 6,600 yards from the tips, it is still not the longest course you will find on this list.

Wide fairways and views of the surrounding area are presented by the Hill Course, which has a distinctly links flavour. The Par 71 layout features the only par 3 of more than 200 yards, and that comes early on. The 2nd hits 218 yards from the tips and offers the first real test on the course. The 5th is a par 5 and the hardest hole on the course, while the 9th and 12th are the other two par 5s, and both are 475 yards or less, offering birdie chances. There is also a run of four consecutive par 4s on the back nine, all of which are more than 400 yards from the tips.

Rooms and Lodges

There is a range of accommodation options at Barnham Broom. The resort features a variety of rooms in its four-star hotel, while there is also a selection of six luxury, self-catering lodges that can be rented out.

Even the Standard Rooms in the Barnham Broom Hotel come equipped with double or twin beds, Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, and The White Company luxury toiletries. The Superior Rooms add another layer of luxury on top of that with a king-sized bed, while the Junior Suites also have a living area in the corner of a much larger room.

Named after the two courses at Barnham Broom, the suites with the most luxury are the Hill Suit and the Valley Suite. Each comes with a super king-sized bed, separate living area and en-suite bathrooms. The pair also have amazing views out over the golf courses that they are named after.

The six lodges (Priory 2, 3, 4 and Saxon 1, 2, 5) offer a more private stay for guests of the resort. The Priory Lodges sleep between four and five people, while the Saxon Lodges can sleep up to eight people. Each selection is self-catering, and comes equipped with a glorious kitchen, along with living area and a balcony which overlooks the golf course.

Health, Fitness & Spa

The Edge Health & Fitness Club includes a heated swimming pool, along with a sauna, steam room and bubble pool. There are also both squash and tennis courts which can be used by both guests of the resorts and members of The Edge.

The fitness club features an air-conditioned gym which has a range of the latest gym technology. There are cardiovascular and resistance machines, along with an array of free weights. Personal training and fitness classes are also available to enjoy.

The Spa at Barnham Broom offers an incredible range of treatments, all given by qualified professionals. Facial treatments, couples' massages, holistic treatments, manicures, and pedicures, and even massages adapted for pregnant women are all available at the Spa at Barnham Broom.
