Royal Obidos | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Located on the western coastline of Portugal, and with views out to the North Atlantic Ocean, the Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort is a stunning place to visit. The 18-hole championship golf course, the Golf Academy, the incredible 5-star hotel and neighbouring apartments, Royal Obidos has something for everyone.

The championship 18-hole golf course was designed by none other than Severiano Ballesteros, and although he unfortunately passed before he saw the course come to fruition, it plays exactly how he wanted it to. The course is now the proud host of the Open de Portugal on the European Challenge Tour, and has been since 2020, when it was a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour.

There are incredible views of the North Atlantic Ocean from several elevated points on the golf course, which winds around the accommodation options at Royal Obidos. The 5-star Evolutee Hotel is a luxurious option, while the Royal Obidos Villas & Apartments offer something more private for families and couples.

Every budding golfer wants to take a trip to Portugal to play golf, and Royal Obidos should be right towards the top of everyone’s list, and it ticks all the boxes.

Royal Obidos Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Royal Obidos Golf Course - A Championship Venue

Having only opened in 2012, Royal Obidos is one of the newest courses to feature on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, but it has already become a jewel in the Portuguese golfing crown in that time. The great Seve Ballesteros was the man behind the golf course design, one of his last before he passed away.

After a gentle opening hole, water then comes into play on three of the next five holes. Two of those are par-3s, with the 3rd being the signature hole on the front nine. The 3rd is a shot par-3, but with water all around the green, it is a difficult approach shot. The 6th then plays across the water, and despite it being even shorter than the 3rd hole, plenty of golf balls end up in the lagoon short of the green.

The second nine holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Six of the holes meander between an intricate ecosystem of lakes interconnected by cascading streams. The highlight of the back nine is the 18th, which measures at almost 600 yards from the back tees. It has a panoramic view over the back nine, the clubhouse and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

The course is the current host of the Open de Portugal on the European Challenge Tour. 2020 was the first hosting of the tournament, when it was a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour. Garrick Higgo was the winner that year, with Marco Penge winning more recently in 2023.

Royal Obidos Golf Academy

The Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort is the home to its own Golf Academy, run by Head Professional Roger Jorge. He began his coaching career in 2007 and since then has gone on to work with students of all ages and levels of ability.

The Golf Academy itself is the home to a stunning driving range, with which guests of the resort receive a discount on tokens for practice balls. There, you can work on the long game, before moving to the short game area. That includes a chipping area and putting green, so you can hone your skills before taking on the course.

Jorge provides lessons from the Royal Obidos Golf Academy. Individual one-hour lessons are available, as well as being a part of a group clinic. For a proper golfing lesson, you can go out onto the course with the Head Professional, where you will be taught about course management, and choosing what shot to play at the right time, along with the mechanics of different golfing swings.

4 & 5-Star Accommodation

The Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort plays host to two different types of accommodation, both of which are at least 4-stars. The 4-star Royal Obidos Villas & Apartments are complimented brilliantly by the 5-star Evolutee Hotel.

The standard room at the Evolutee Hotel is the Superior Room, which comes with free Wi-Fi and incredible views. It is designed with typical Portuguese tiles in the bathroom for that traditional vibe, while having all the mod-cons for the modern guest. There are then Deluxe Rooms and Suites, with the Master Suite being the best of the best at the Evolutee Hotel.

There is a wide range of offerings in the Royal Obidos Villas & Apartments action of the resort’s accommodation. A range of one and two bedroom apartments are available, along with studio apartments, to suit the needs of every guest and family.

Mandalay Spa

The Mandalay Spa at Royal Obidos owes its name to the former capital of Burma, Mandalay. The spa’s philosophy derives from that region, with a range of Southeast Asian therapies and treatments on offer, including Indian and Thai medicine.

There are five treatment rooms at the Mandalay Spa at Royal Obidos, with two of those suited for couples treatments and massages. There is also a Vichy shower, sauna, Turkish bath and a dynamic pool with a whirlpool. A revelation room, pilates room and gym provides the other facilities.

The treatments of the Mandalay Spa are based on healing traditions of Thai royalty and Ayurvedic Indian medicine, recognized as India's oldest medical science. SUNDIRI, Ytsara, The Refinery London and Linda Meredith Skincare are among the range of high-quality products used by the team of qualified professionals and therapists.
