The golf course was built on land formerly used by the Portuguese Royal Family as a hunting reserve. It is a pleasant course, with water coming into play on just three of the holes, including the opening two The 1st and 2nd at Campo Real run either side of a lake, which will take any errant shot to the right from either tee. The 9th also features water, just in front of the tee box.

The golf course achieved its championship status in 2010, when it hosted the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open. Australian Karen Lunn won the event, with South African Ashleigh Buhai winning in 2011, the last edition of the tournament.
