Quinta da Marinha | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

A lot of people think that when it comes to golf packages in Portugal, the Algarve is the place to go. Now, there are a lot of great resorts on the Algarve, and it has its reputation for a reason. However, Portugal is home to much more than just the Algarve when it comes to golf, and the Quinta da Marinha resort shows just that.

Located in the Cascais region of the country, and just half an hour from the nation’s capital and its airport, Quinta da Marinha is in a perfect place for international visitors. It is one of three resorts on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list in the region, with Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa within a 30 minute drive from Quinta da Marinha.

The golf course, laid out by Robert Trent Jones Sr and Cabell Robinson, is a stunning piece of architecture, as it winds through the pine trees and open ground. The Par-71 venue has been the host to several international tournaments, including the European Challenge Tour, Seniors Tour Championship and the Ladies Masters.

The resort’s accommodation options have been boosted in recent years thanks to the addition of the Onyria Marinha Boutique Hotel. It was opened in 2023, and accompanies the Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel, which went through extensive refurbishments in the years leading up to the opening of the Onyria Marinha. The resort’s villas have also been looked after in recent years, being refurbished to the high standard they are now.

Overall, there is not a bad word to say about Quinta da Marinha. It is a stunning resort, with a wonderful golf course and three glorious accommodation options. Forget the Algarve, take a trip to Cascais for your golfing holiday to Portugal instead!

Quinta da Marinha Overview | NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts

Quinta da Marinha Golf

A joint venture between Robert Trent Jones Sr and Cabell Robinson, two of the most highly-regarded golf course architects in the world, the Quinta da Marinha Golf Course lives up to expectations.

The 18-hole, Par 71 championship lay-out is not the longest, at just over 6,400 yards. However, there are plenty of challenges along the way, while golfers can enjoy the views of the Sintra Mountains in one direction, and the Atlantic Ocean in the other.

The most attractive hole at Quinta da Marinha is the 3rd, a par-4 which slopes down towards the green with the sea as a backdrop. The 5th is a demanding par-3, which requires an accurate approach to a wide but shallow green, while playing over a lake. Not too much to worry about! The 10th is one of the signature holes on the Quinta da Marinha track; a lengthy par-5, with an island green to finish. Is it worth going for it in two?

Quinta da Marinha Academy

The Quinta da Marinha Academy provides lessons and tuition for both members of the public and guests of the resort. That is done from the brand new driving range, which was upgraded in 2020.

A second putting green and new bunker practice area were introduced to complement the existing 32-bay facility and putting greens. The new-look range employs TrackMan and swing analysis technology to provide golfers with detailed information about every practice stroke before they head out onto the course.

The Quinta da Marinha Academy offers lessons to golfers of all abilities and ages. From those just starting the game, to those looking to fine tune their swings, the Quinta da Marinha Academy can help with all queries. A team of qualified professionals are on hand to analyse and help improve your game.

World Class Accommodation

There is a lot to choose from in terms of accommodation at Quinta da Marinha, with three world class options now available. There has been an extensive refurbishment of the original Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel over the last few years.

Expert-led renovations saw significant improvements made to the hotel’s rooms and hallways, as well as the lobby and all three dining options – the buffet-style Five Pines Restaurant, the gourmet Rocca and the ambient Trent Jones bar.

The resort’s 27 holiday villas were also refurbished a year later. Changes included adding an extra bedroom into each villa to make them more suitable for families and larger groups, while there were also a whole host of aesthetic changes to give the properties a fresher, sparkling look.

The biggest change across the resort was the opening of the 5-star Onyria Marinha Boutique Hotel at the start of 2023. The brand new hotel features 84 incredible rooms, suites and villas, culinary options and function spaces.

Natur Spa at Onyria Quinta da Marinha

The Natur Spa is another of the Onyria Quinta da Marinha’s selling points. The spa allows guests to slow down and relax, enjoying the surrounding nature of the resort.

There are plenty of treatments on offer at the Natur Spa, including special recovery massages for golfers who have just come off the course. There are also the usual mind and body works, including facial treatments, deep tissue massages and much more.

The Natur Spa at Onyria Quinta da Marinha also offers group packages. They have treatments specifically for both the bride and groom, so they can be relaxed for the big day, with a bachelorette party offering for all the bridesmaids as well. Finally, the Natur Spa also offers specialised treatments for youngsters, who can enjoy a day at the spa with their parents.
