Quinta da Ria Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Two Challenging Golf Courses

Like a lot of resorts on our list, Quinta da Ria is the home to two glorious and challenging golf courses - the Ria Course and the Cima Course.

The venue has hosted a number of high calibre tournaments. The PGA EuroPro Tour came to Quinta da Ria in 2003 and 2004, with European Seniors Tour Qualifying also being played here three times during the decade. The Portugal Algarve Seniors Open and Ladies Open were also held at the Portuguese site.

Ria Course
The Ria Course is located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and the 18-hole lay-out offers views of the Cacela Velha and the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

Designed by the world-renowned golf course architect Rocky Roquemore, the Ria Course winds through the natural landscape of the region.

The par-3 5th is a stunning hole, measuring close to 200 yards, and playing over water. Three bunkers to the back of the green detract any shots going long, but the water is short, so club selection is vital. 14 is a short par-4 measuring at just more than 300 yards. Long hitters could take it on, but it is played over water. The shorter hitters will take a fairway wood or long iron before then playing to the green. 16 and 17 also feature huge water hazards, while the 18th has a stream running down its left side.

Cima Course
Quinta de Cima is the Championship Course and it offers different and very unique characteristics compared to the Ria Course. Also designed by Rocky Roquemore, the Cima has wide fairways and undulating greens which ask golfers for perfect course management.

The Cima Course opens up with a gentle par-5 but that is not a sign of things to come. The course gets harder as it goes on with holes shaping both left and right. There are several natural creeks that run through the course, as well as a number of water features.

Water first appears as a running creek in front of the 4th green, with a couple more holes also featuring thin strips of blue. The last three holes is where the water really comes into play. 16 is a long par-5 that could be reachable for the longest hitters, but water right and front of the green might deter. The par-3 17th is almost 190 yards long and features a huge lake to the right of the green, while the closing hole on the Cima Course has water all down the right side, especially near the green.

Academy Course & Practice Facilities

The Academy Course is the ideal place to improve short game and approach play. The three par-3 holes each have a number of tees to make it into a short 9-hole course. It looks simple, but there are a few challenges along the way, and it is a course that is enjoyable for golfers of all levels.

Quinta da Ria is also the home to a stunning, state of the art driving range which is 300 metres long and 100 metres wide. There are also three putting greens, with all three having space to practise chipping. One of the greens by the Cima Course has a couple of bunkers, so you can improve your sand play as well before going out onto the golf course.

Robinson Quinta da Ria

The accommodation at the Quinta da Ria resort comes from a large hotel chain - Robinson. The hotel offers an array of glorious accommodation options, a range of WellFit activities, restaurants and a kids club.
