Camiral Golf & Wellness

Camiral | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Camiral Resort has a lot to offer. The Stadium course - widely ranked in the top two in Spain and within the top 10 on the continent and a second course, the Tour, that would be more highly regarded if it wasn’t next to the Stadium. The deeply glamourous Camiral hotel and a second hotel, Lavida, that offers laid-back style at a lower price point, plus a state-of-the-art Wellness Centre with cutting-edge treatments.
The setting is lovely between the sea and the mountains, just 20 minutes from Girona and its swag-bag of Michelin stars. Two courses, two hotels, great restaurants and exceptional spa facilities make this one of the continent’s finest all-round destinations. Brilliant practice facilities and villas to rent too.

For a while, Camiral may not have even come to be on the land it currently sits on. The land was set aside for a race track to be designed and constructed so Formula 1 could come to the northern part of Spain. However, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya took that role. Following that idea falling through, the land was then set to be a purpose-built venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup, which was eventually held at Valderrama.

Now, Camiral is the home of two stunning golf courses - the Stadium Course and the Tour Course. The two offer different challenges for golfers, but both have been used as part of the Qualifying School program on the DP World Tour. There is also a world class Golf Hub at Camiral, with state-of-the-art practice facilities alongside coaching and lessons from PGA-qualified professionals.

Elsewhere on the resort there is a range of accommodation aimed at different guests.
The 5-star Hotel Camiral is a luxury destination with a sophisticated design, elegant rooms and social spaces overlooking a gloriously glamorous pool.  The Lavida Hotel is a laid-back, slightly more cost-conscious option with clever design touches, aimed at golfers and the many cyclists who stay in the this part of Spain. There is also an array of villa rentals for those looking for a more long-term stay at the resort.

The Wellness Centre within the resort is a real highlight, with a wide range of massages, treatments and relaxation therapies available, performed by a team of exceptional therapists. The facility takes a holistic approach to wellness and treats a wide range of issues from stiff, tired muscles to weight loss, detox and aging.

Camiral Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Stadium Course - A DP World Tour Venue

The PGA Catalunya Stadium Course has been the venue for several professional tournaments, including being a key part of Qualifying School for the DP World Tour for a number of years. The course has consistently been ranked highly among its suitors since opening in 1999.

Water comes into play on seven of the 18 holes of the Stadium Course, and with trees pressing into fairways and bunkers that seem to be in all the right places, it is a tough place to play. Holes 3, 4 and 5 see water come in on the left side, with the 5th being a 210-yard par-3 from the back tees, and with no room for error with what will be at least a long iron in hand.

Tour Course

The second course at Camiral may not be as well-known as the Stadium Course, but the Tour Course provides its own unique challenge for golfers. It has also become a host of Qualifying School on the DP World Tour, alongside its older and more well-known sibling.

Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo were the designers, who made sure that despite it playing slightly shorter than the Stadium Course, it would still be a stern test. The course flows through the pine trees and around a number of lakes, but most of the holes on the course do have wide fairways.

There seem to be bunkers and water hazards in all the right places on the Tour Course, with errant shots being caught up in those problem areas. However, play the Tour Course right, and with patience, and a good score is certainly out there to be had.

PGA & Junior Academy

The PGA Academy is based at the Camiral Golf Hub. Enric Lopez and his team of qualified instructors have all the knowledge, as well as the best equipment and facilities to teach you how to play golf, including a TopTracer range, swing analysis and club fitting.

The Golf Academy offers private individual classes, group clinics and even intensive courses, so there is something for everyone. Golfers even have the chance to have on-course lessons, to learn about shot selection and course management, while in the hands of the PGA-qualified professional.

Not only is there an academy for adults, but at Camiral, there is also a Junior Academy that focuses on improving the games of those ages 3 and above. Programmes run throughout the year, from those for elite talents, to those who are just beginning in the game, and even for those who require adaptations to enjoy the game of golf.

There is a forest adventure for kids with a zip line and wooden bridges amongst the trees, while you can also go on a fascinating biodiversity tour with the resort’s resident biologist, who will explain how Camiral is working to create and protect the natural habitats of flora and fauna on the property alongside its golf courses.
