Equipment: What’s in Rory McIlroy’s Deutsche Bank Championship-winning bag?

A new putter and a new putting coach help Rory to his first PGA Tour win since May 2015

Rory McIlroy landed his first victory since changing to a new Scotty Cameron putter following the announcement Nike are to stop making golf clubs.

But other than the new M1 Prototype putter, it was a full bag of Nike hardware that helped McIlroy fire a superb final round 65 to win the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots ahead of Paul Casey.

McIlroy claimed he had been inundated with new golf equipment after Nike decided they were going to focus on shoes and clothes instead of hardware but has dropped no hints about switching his clubs any time soon.

Putting has long been the problem and it seems time spent with new coach Phil Kenyon and the new Scotty Cameron putter are paying immediate dividends.

Olympic dropouts, golf

Last week at The Barclays, McIlroy was third to last for stokes gained in putting, this week he was third.

It was no surprise to see the Northern Irishman lead the field in driving distance with his Nike Vapor Fly Pro driver.

The win, his 12th on the PGA Tour, takes him back up to number three in the world and into  fourth place in the FedEX Cup standings.

McIlroy was four over par through his first three holes of the event at TPC Boston.

“Things can turn around very quickly in this game,” McIlroy said.

“I think those last 15 holes on Friday were definitely a turning point. Not just in this tournament, but maybe in my season.”
