Equipment: Nike Lunar Control 4 reader review
The Nike Lunar Control 4 golf shoes were designed with input from Rory McIlroy himself.
Could Nike make a golf shoe that allowed McIlroy to swing at 120mph while still keeping a solid base, driving his power from the ground up?
The answer was an emphatic, yes.
But how do the Nike Lunar Control 4 work for your average club golfer?
Well, we teamed up with Nike to carry out the ultimate club-golfer test of the Lunar Control 4 shoes.
We enlisted 12 readers from the far corners of the UK to test the shoes out over a number of rounds and send us their feedback.
Here are comments from six of our testers:
Brian Beattie
Club: South Beds
Handicap: 18
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
I played 27 holes at a corporate golf day in very wet conditions and the grip was fantastic. The shoes are very supportive and at the end of the day the only parts of me that were dry were my feet.
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
They were a little bit bright compared to what I’m used to but as soon as I put them on I was sold. They are not cheap but are a quality product, good value in all conditions. I have no hesitation in recommending them.
Don Bowen
Club: Waldringfield
Handicap: 22
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
I was very impressed with them from the moment I put them on. They look great too. One of the most impressive aspects is the grip. We’ve had a lot of rain so this was really put to the test.
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
A very impressive golf shoe. The grip, in particular was fantastic. There was no sliding about when using the driver. Very comfortable shoe with a very easily interchangeable insole, which is a bonus.
James Peters
Club: Richmond Park
Handicap: 16
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
Performed great on the course. I suffer from heel and Achilles pain, plus I often get blisters with new shoes, so the fact I didn’t with these was a massive plus. Very stable and I didn’t feel that I was going to slip at any point.
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
Loved them. They are the most comfortable spiked shoe I’ve used. Very much trainer style in terms of comfort and feel. They also had the ‘those are a bit flash’ comments from some of the other club members!
Kenneth Lee
Club: West Essex
Handicap: 13
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
On the course they felt very comfortable, although they felt a little bigger than the LC3 which I also have, perhaps a little bit wider. They offer plenty of support.
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
They just look really stylish, sturdy and well made. Overall they are a great pair of golf shoes – very comfortable to wear and to walk in. They seem to provide a very stable base with lots of traction. They offer everything you need from a golf shoe.
Paul Wilson
Club: Pinner Hill
Handicap: 13
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
I put them on for the first time and hoped for the best with regards to the dreaded blister issue but my concerns were soon allayed. They were like slippers.
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
These shoes really are brilliant. On the course the extra width gave me brilliant stability and my footing felt very secure. I think I may be a Nike convert moving forwards as I have always had shoes from another brand. I’d definitely recommend people give these a try.
Paul Gaylor
Club: Littlehampton
Handicap: 9
HOW THEY PERFORMED:
I tested them on a very dry links and they were no less comfortable than a spikeless model. They seemed to be a very good fit and I was impressed at the comfort levels
OVERALL VERDICT ON THE NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 4
They are bright, striking and look very high- tech. They’ve got the performance to match – comfort and stability. They feel very much like a premium shoe. They might be more suited to the younger, trendier player but the performance is excellent.
