First Impressions
These shoes are both a development of and something of a departure from the Ecco Biom Hybrid shoe family. The shape of the shoe is familiar but this is a new look and – dare I say it – a more conventional one than we have seen before. With a range of colour options, you can go for a safe clay like this one or a much bolder option if you think you can carry it off. Me? I will happily stick to the grey.
On Course Testing
I have put these shoes through some serious links action. They have accompanied me on testing trips to Kent and the north-west coast of Ireland so they are no strangers to sun-baked fairways and also a little bit of fescue rough and even the occasional pot bunker. I am a size UK10 1/2 and I find an Ecco 45 is perfect for me.
As for the technical details, the shoes feature a reworked upper, notably around the toe area, to produce a sleeker, slimmer look, while the tongue has been completely redesigned to produce a more ergonomic shape that fits more comfortably to the foot.
If you have never worn a premium leather glove to play golf in, then you will be more than happy with an all-weather version that is more durable, arguably more functional and will cost a fraction of the price.
However, once you have breathed in that new-leather aroma, felt the connection to the club, seen that pearly-white colour as you address the ball and had the satisfaction of tucking it snugly into your back pocket – like the pros do – then there is simply no turning back.
The same is true – for me at least – with Ecco golf shoes. Truth told, I only need to see one of those grey Ecco boxes and all the good feelings are coming back.
I was an early adopter, seeing the huge potential for the first golf shoe that didn’t really look like a golf shoe, that you could wear as easily off the golf course as on it.
The Biom Hybrid franchise has long set the standards as far as I am concerned for a golf shoe that won’t let you down.
The calling cards are comfort and durability – long after you have thrown that grey box into the recycling, these shoes are still performing just as well as they did on the day you bought them.
So what’s new about the H4s? Well, visually there is a clear development and there is also a new material. To my eye, I was very comfortable with the incredibly soft yak leather of previous models. Now, we have more of a mesh look.
I wondered if the shoe would show creases on a way that previous models in this family never have. There was some evidence of this after a couple of rounds.
What stays the same is the support you get from these shoes. They may look like trainers but they have a very solid structure. That is particularly noticeable to me in the arch on the inside of the foot. I never feel like my foot is rolling over when I am wearing these shoes.
I know I can pop a pair of Eccos straight on and go and play. It may just be – it evidently is – that these shoes just fit my feet and gait particularly well. But I have never worn another shoe that I can put on after breakfast, play 18 holes, take off for lunch, put back on afterwards for another 18 and be quite happy to keep wearing when I come off the course.
That’s why Ecco Biom H4s represent great value to me even though the outlay is more than most other shoes on the market.
