FIRST HIT: Cobra AMP driver

Cobra's vibrant new driver represents a big change in aesthetics for the brand. We took it for a spin...

Ask your fellow club members what they expect from a Cobra driver and, chances are, the answer will be what we’ve all come to love over the years: reliability and performance in a no-nonsense package.

It seems the brand are out to change their identity, though, with the release of several new products featuring bright, loud colour schemes.

The new AMP driver is a prime example – it has the most striking visual appearance of any driver since TaylorMade launched the white-headed R11.

Starting from the top, it features a fluorescent orange grip, a futuristic-looking silver shaft, and a smart but extremely loud head with a silver crown and orange sole.

Rumours are circulating right now that Rickie Fowler could be joining Cobra from Titleist and that this club is designed to pay homage to the talented youngster.

Either way, if you’re looking to make a statement on the course, this is the club for you.

It achieves this wide appeal by combining a superb head shape – the silver crown is excellent once you get used to it – with serious forgiveness. It offers a lot more than just bold visuals, though – it is a serious performer and will suit all abilities.

Thanks to Cobra’s special E9 face technology, there is lots of help at hand when you miss the centre of the face, and easy-to-use adjustable technology lets you set the face angle open, closed or neutral to help counteract bad shots. The feel and sound from the face is soft yet very appealing and the distance on offer is excellent.

IN THE WORDS OF THE DESIGNER

Tom Preece, Vice President of Research and Development at Cobra Puma Golf: “The AMP driver features technology focused on delivering superior distance and accuracy.

“The titanium 6-4 head with a semi-forged, milled Ti face features E9 face technology with dual roll to provide more distance to shots above and below the centre line.

“It’s all about moving weight inside the head, strategically, to position the centre of gravity very precisely.
“So it’s really about pre-customising the driver based on a player’s clubhead speed.

“We’ve maximised ball speeds for shots that miss the centre of the club face.”
