I’m really taking a liking to Stuburt’s autumn winter collection this year, in case you hadn’t already noticed. I’ve tested their mid layers, base layers and jackets, so it’s time to give the other half of my body some TLC, as we unveil the Stuburt Evolution Tech Waterproof Golf Trousers…
Stuburt Evolution Tech Waterproof Golf Trousers review
NCG SUMMARY
These trousers are my new go-to piece of kit for keeping my legs warm and dry. They really do have a great range of features, including a fully taped seam design, zip leg openings and side back pockets.
Just make sure you wear them over your conventional golf trousers, otherwise get a size down from what you usually go for!
PROS
- Windproof as well as full waterproof protection
- Lightweight and breathable
- Stretchy waistband will be ideal for some
CONS
- Bagginess will put people off
First Impressions
If you’re shopping for these on the official Stuburt website, there’s a really handy sizing chart that will give you advice on which sizing you should be going for depending on your chest, waist and leg sizes. Golf clothing websites usually offer these, and they’re a godsend for people like me who get fussy about how things fit me.
Straight out the box, the first thing I noticed was how spacious these looked. If these were normal waterproof garments, the sheer stretch and size of them would have worried me, but seen as I’ll be wearing these over golf trousers, this didn’t really phase me at all. The fabric felt a little thicker to standard golf trousers, so I was hopeful these would also offer some sort of thermal protection on top of their waterproof capabilities.
Slipping them on, the fit was big, which I expected. Not too long, but more on the baggy side, so if you’re after a pair of these trousers, I’d actually advise going for a size down from what you usually take. That is if you’re not planning on over-indulging throughout Christmas…
On-course Testing
Let’s talk tech first of all. These trousers feature a Dri-Back membrane for complete rain protection. How does it work? It’s quite simple really…
There are millions of microscopic pores in the Dri-Back membrane that allow vapour to escape without allowing water droplets in, keeping your body dry and comfortable.
These highly weather resistant fabrics give the wearer superior waterproofing and excellent vapour transmission to maximise performance.
With the bagginess did come an abundance of stretch, though. There’s nothing worse than bending over to pick up your ball and hearing a ‘snap’ from your behind…
It’s also got an elasticated waist, so if you’re a fan of putting balls and every other golf item you own in your pockets, don’t worry about losing room around your waistline.
Let’s talk about zips on trouser legs. I bet there’s a fair few people out there reading this who haven’t a clue what they’re for, am I right?
Gone are the days of doing the hokey cokey with your shoes before changing trousers. These zips allow you to keep your golf shoes on whilst slipping into the trousers ever so seamlessly.
I also like to see Stuburt’s branding running vertically at the bottom of the right leg as it provides the reassurance of quality.
The 19th hole
They’re a golf bag’s best friend, they really are. You can fold the trousers up really easily and slot them in your full length side pocket and keep them in there all year round.
They do offer a small amount of thermal protection, which also deems them windproof.
As for taking them off the course, I can’t see myself doing this. They’re too baggy and scream winter golf, so I’m giving them a nice home inside my new favourite winter golf bag, the Sun Mountain Two5 Plus Carry Bag. If you haven’t read my review of it yet, what are you waiting for?
