Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trousers review: First impressions

How long have we been wearing trousers? You’d think after hundreds of years of making a pretty fundamental garment, they might have mastered the art by now.

But anyone who’s been round the block when it comes to buying golf trousers will know that it’s easier said than done to find a well-fitting pair.

There’s the zip that won’t stay up, the waistband made from a material harder to shape than diamonds, and the inner leg that just has you fidgeting all the way round the course.

I’ve rarely found trouser nirvana and on the rare occasion I’ve discovered a pair that don’t have me spending the four hours of a round wishing I wasn’t on the course, I’ve quickly worn them into oblivion.

And so I worry a little for the future of the Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trousers – because you’re basically going to have to peel them off my lower half.

If the classic company’s Airlight Golf Trousers set the standard for comfort in a modern look, these are considerably raising the bar for those of us who like a more traditional fit.

The blurb says “these lightweight golf trousers are designed with stretchy, breathable fabrics to ensure you can stay comfortable, cool and supported while out on the course”.

I can confirm this isn’t just a selling slogan. It’s all true. The material is a mix of polyamide, polyester and elastane and they are extremely lightweight. When you put them on, you’ll be surprised at how the waistband moves with you rather than locking you in for a certain shape. These look good with a belt, but you shouldn’t even need one. They’re that well-fitting.

I’m a weird shape (34 waist, 29 leg) and while the leg ran slightly longer than I would have expected, It doesn’t feel like you’ve got a mass of material in a puddle round your ankle.

You’ll hear a little shimmer as you put these on and move about in them for the first time but, don’t worry, it isn’t like wearing a set of waterproofs. You’ll soon forget about the mild sonic aberration as you start striding on the fairways.

For the Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trouser does everything you’d hope it would on the course. They’re incredibly well-fitting, that mixture of the elastane in the material stretching around you rather than hindering you. They don’t stick, they don’t rub, and, crucially, they don’t chafe.

If you find yourself frequently adjusting as you walk, forget about that with these trousers. You will glide.

The material is also extremely breathable. I wore these both during a late-autumn reminder of summer (it was pushing 20 degrees) and as the first frosts settled. The result was the same – cool and never cold or uncomfortable.

With four pockets, the front two relatively deep but not to the point where you would feel there was a gap, there is plenty of room for everything you’d need to have on the course.

I prefer trousers to be a little looser on the fitting side and that’s certainly the case with the Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trousers around the knee and shin, but the overall shape overrides these small concerns.

Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trousers review: The 19th hole

The Lyle & Scott Golf Tech Trousers proved such a hit that I’ve actually worn them off the course in a formal setting. The classic gold eagle just above the back right pocket is a nice touch and the overall fitting, and particularly the stretch, means these will perform very well whatever you face on the course.

If it’s a walk between shots, or moving over a tricky lie, the Lyle & Scott Golf Tech trouser will shift instead of restricting you. It’s rare, in my experience, to be able to combine comfort with a smart look. These pull it off marvellously.
