Original Penguin’s latest foray into golf hoodies certainly looks the part, but how does it perform when out on the course?

Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Sports Hoodie review: First Impressions

Where do you stand on hoodies? Cards on the table, I’m all for them. I own a, frankly, obscene number of them – probably way too many for a 46-year-old man – and they’re an absolutely key part of my golfing wardrobe.

So if you’d curiously clicked on this review, hoping I’d be savaging a garment that still divides plenty of people on social media, there’s nothing more for you to see here.

The Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Sports Hoodie is more than its mere title, though. It’s thin layering, mix of polyester and elastane, quarter zip, and water repellent stretch fabric will probably see you double it up as a wind and rain jacket.

The hood itself is drawstring, which means no flying objects if you’re a bit overzealous when swinging and also gives you the ability to pull it a bit close if the elements do get a little on the choice side.

When you put it on, you’ve got plenty of room. It performs more like a rain jacket than a conventional hoodie and so if you prefer the fit to be a bit tighter, you may consider going down a size.

Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Sports Hoodie review: NCG Review

Original Penguin enjoy challenging traditional golf club conventions and while this hoodie is lower on the eyebrow scale than the company’s other offerings – see the Check Print polo – it’s still a bold selection out on the course.

The colour blocks effectively cut the garment in half and it is a stylish black and white combination. When playing, the generous fit gives you room to breathe but does not interfere with the swing. It’s still compact enough that there’s not fabric flying everywhere when you are trying to launch into a drive.

The cuffs do naturally hang slightly below the wrist. That may not bother you in the slightest but I do like my hands to be clear of any clothing when swinging and this did mean I was continually pulling the sleeves up and down when taking a shot and walking between them.

During testing in Scotland and at York GC, the hood sat lightly behind the shoulders and didn’t move significantly for me when taking shots. Overall, there was a free-flowing movement through the swing and the looser nature of the garment meant nothing was sticking or catching on either backswing or downswing.

There is probably a limit to how much water the Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Sports Hoodie could absorb in a downpour, but it was pretty effective in a short shower in which I was caught. Ten minutes after the droplets stopped following, this hoodie was pretty dry.

The quarter zip makes it flexible enough to easily put on and take off and it’s seriously lightweight, which means it’s also easy to fold and store in your bag when it isn’t around your shoulders. It’s so light, in fact, that I mistakenly left it in my bag after one round and went back out on the course without knowing it was already packed.

Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Sports Hoodie review: The 19th hole

How you’re perceived in the clubhouse will largely depend on how your club responds to hoodies. But if recognised golf attire is the mantra for the dress code, then you’ll definitely turn heads in this classy, yet, comfortable outerwear.

Machine washable, I’ve given it a spin on a couple of occasions already and it has come through in flying colours – no loss of shape, no huge creasing of fabric, and, crucially, no shrinkage.
