FootJoy Colour Block Midlayer review: NCG Summary

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

This is a really smart and premium looking midlayer from FootJoy. It fits nicely and performs well on the course.

PROS

  • Comfortable and lightweight.
  • Flexible performance.
  • Stylish looks.

CONS

  • Some unusual colours.

First Impressions

When new kit for reviewing comes through, I’m a bit like a small child at Christmas, such is my enthusiasm to see what’s inside the parcel. The Colour Block is one of three Spring/Summer 2023 collection midlayers from FJ that arrived together.

Initially my eyes were drawn to the Cloud Camo Print and the Space Dye Chill-Out models and I rather ignored the Colour Block. Aren’t bold flower prints and camo designs all the rage? This looked a little plain in comparison. And there are an awful lot of quarter zip construction midlayers to pick from as it is such staple bit of clothing.

So there’s nothing particularly striking about this design at first sight. When it comes to handling the garment, it does feel really soft and stretchy, with the usual FootJoy premium construction. This model is available in four colours, a couple of which looked rather garish for my tastes.

I tested the true blue/navy version which I think is the nicest looking and probably the easiest too pair with the rest of your outfit. The style is simple and straightforward. There is a contrasting half-zipper which is a smart touch. The stretch jersey twill fabric is an easy care fabric made from 88% Polyester and 12% Spandex.

The fabric does feel to be at the thinner end of a mid layer spectrum as you would expect for a Spring/Summer item. A couple of contrasting FootJoy motifs adorn the left collar and upper back.

On The Course

I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. FootJoy describe the fit as athletic. That’s often a sign that I need to go up a size. But it in this case the medium size fitted just perfectly with the length of the sleeves and body being just right.

I have tested this as a second layer, over a base layer or a polo shirt with no sense of tightness or restriction. In fact the fabric is so stretchy and light that it barely feels like you’re wearing a midlayer. The fabric also felt very comfortable next to the skin. I felt no restruction to my complete range motion during the golf swing.

It layered comfortably beneath a rain jacket when the odd shower came through, so it is a very flexible and versatile garment for all weather conditions. After my initial feeling that it looked a little bland, I actually now feel that it looks rather smart and stylish.

As with all FootJoy midlayers, this comes with moisture-wicking technology. Breathability seemed to be fine, with no moisture build-up in the different temperatures experienced during testing.

And should you need to take it off and stow it away in your golf bag, it folds up very compactly. Furthermore, I invariably carry my golf bag and I have experienced ‘pilling’ at the back of the garment with other similar weight midlayers. There were no such issues with this model.

The 19th hole

So here we have another smart and practical midlayer from FootJoy. It is comfortable and a flexible part of a layering system.

I think that it is something I’ll be keeping for the golf course rather than other outdoor activities – it does look quite ‘golfy’ I think, if that’s a word.

It’s already been through the wash a couple of times and doesn’t need ironing, which is good.

I’m off to The Highlands tomorrow for a few days of golf and the forecast is looking rather mixed. So this versatile garment has definitely got the nod and is packed and ready to go to wear during any occasion.
