WITB: Charl Schwartzel, Valspar Championship

The South African relied on a bag full of Nike equipment to win in Florida..

Charl Schwartzel won only his second tournament on American soil yesterday, with a playoff victory against Bill Haas at the Valspar Championship in Florida.

The South African started the day five shots behind Haas and with strong winds forecast for the afternoon, a couple of early birdies was just the start he was looking for to put on some early pressure.

A birdie at the 11th hole was sandwiched with bogeys at 10 & 12 but with Haas faltering behind, Schwartzel was just one off the pace. The 2011 Masters Champion then showed his class with birdies at 13, 14 & 17 to get to 7-under-par.
“I thought I played really well on the weekend.” A par at the last for Haas meant a playoff, and with the American finding the bunker with his second shot, Schwartzel only needed a tap in par to secure the win, incredibly only his second in America.

“I thought I played really well on the weekend,” Schwartzel said. “I just kept telling myself, you did it a couple weeks ago, you can do it again.”

He relied on a full set of Nike clubs to get the job done, lets take a closer look:

Driver: Nike Vapor Fly Pro 11.5-degree (Aldila Rogue 70X)
Fairway Wood: Nike Vapor Fly 3-wood/13-degree
Irons: Nike MM Proto (2), Nike Vapor Pro Combo (3, 5-AW)
Wedges: Nike VR Forged 54-degree and 60-degree
Putter: Nike Method Prototype
Ball: Nike RZN Tour Platinum
Footwear: Nike Lunar Control 4

The Vapor Fly Pro driver and RZN Tour Platinum golf ball used by Charl on his way to victory was the same one he used at the Tshwane Open just weeks ago. It’s also the same driver-ball combination utilised by four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy.
