WGC Bridgestone Invitational betting: Steve’s top tip – Rory McIlroy (10/1)

The WGC Bridgestone invitational betting market is a puzzler. I’ve been down on the chances of Rory McIlroy for much of the year but the feeling I got from his frustrating Open was that he’s not too far away from getting back to his best.

The exhibition he put on, from the back nine of the first round to the end of the second, was a wonder to behold. And despite some inconsistent play, let’s not forget he also finished with a 67.

Now that’s Rory to a tee in some of the majors – posting a top 10 with a nice final round but never really contending.

If you’re looking at him this week at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, you’ve also got to consider the effect of parting ways with long-term caddie JP Fitzgerald.

I’ve seen this portrayed in a number of places as yet another blow in a year that’s yet to really get off the ground.

But I think this could be really cathartic for the Northern Irishman. Think back to his last personal crisis, when he broke up with fiancée Caroline Wozniacki and was written off.

What did he do that week? He tore round Wentworth and won the BMW PGA Championship.

He came back from blowing the Masters in 2011 by destroying the field at Congressional at the US Open.

McIlroy deals with these sorts of setbacks very well. He’s taken this title, in 2014, and it would be no surprise to me if he had another strong run this week.

WGC Bridgestone Invitational betting: Steve’s each-way tip – Justin Thomas (50/1)

Justin Thomas’ price of 50/1 absolutely leapt off the page at me. How quickly the oddsmakers forget.

The American was sensational at the start of the year, when reeling off three quick victories. He hasn’t stood at the top of the podium since but he’s still recorded top 10s at New Orleans, Memorial and the US Open.

Thomas has missed three cuts in a row, and that might have something to do with this price, but I’m prepared to forgive him his struggles at the Open.

He was in a very nice position after his opening 67. The American was simply stunned by the ferocity of the weather he faced on the Lancashire links.

He shouldn’t have to worry about that at Firestone and I do believe he is a class act.

Tied 33rd on his debut here last year wasn’t terrible. It would have been much better were it not for a final round 76.

Isn’t 50/1 just too big?

WGC Bridgestone Invitational betting: Steve’s outsider tip – Charl Schwartzel (70/1)

Charl Schwartzel’s finished sixth at the Valspar, third at the Masters, tied second at the St Jude Classic and missed a lot of cuts in between.

But like my other picks, there were bits of light at the Open (a first round 67 for starters). He was just out of the top 10 at the European Open in Germany last week.

Schwartzel is another player who likes it at Firestone. He was seventh last year and he also finished in the top five in 2015. 70/1 feels like another big price.
