US Open Final Qualifying: The Results from ‘Golf’s Longest Day’

It’s called Golf Longest Day and for good reason too.

Just under 900 players competed for 64 spots in the 2023 US Open field on June 5, over 36 holes at 10 different venues across America and Canada.

A number of players from the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and amateur ranks tried their arm for major glory and, as per usual, there was plenty of drama.

Qualifying for the US Open is often a brutal day, but it is worth it for those who secure a spot at Los Angeles Country Club.

LACC will become a US Open golf course for the first time this month and only the RBC Canadian Open is left on the PGA Tour before the best players head to California.

From an incredible up-and-down to one-handed chips and a certain PGA Tour winner carrying for his friend, we will take you through the results at each site and the highlights of the day.

Tacoma Country & Golf Club – Lakewood, Washington

Qualifiers: Jesse Schutte, Alexander Yang (a)

Notables to miss the cut: Noah Woosley

Lambton Golf & Country Club – Toronto, Canada

Qualifiers: Ryan Gerard, Vincent Norman, Ryan Armour

Notables to miss the cut: Harry Hall, Jimmy Walker, Michael Block, Callum Tarren, Harry Higgs, Ludvig Aberg

Highlights: Despite his heroics at the PGA Championship, Michael Block failed to secure a spot at LACC, even after carding rounds of 69 and 66.

Ryan Gerard set a staggering standard in Toronto by shooting 63 and 66 and earning medalist honours on 11-under-par.

Pine Tree Golf Club – Boynton Beach, Florida

Qualifiers: Austen Truslow, Brendan Valdes (a), Carlos Ortiz

Notables to miss the cut: Wesley Bryan, Julian Suri, Cristian DiMarco, Cameron Kuchar (a), Matthew Wolff (WD)

Highlights: Austen Truslow finished at the top of the leaderboard on 5-under-par after 36 holes in Florida, and he caught the eye of social media because he occasionally chips with just one hand.

There was extra-hole drama at Boynton Beach and on the sixth playoff hole, LIV Golf’s Carlos Ortiz beat Wesley Bryan and Luis Gagne to secure his fourth US Open appearance.

Hawks Ridge Golf Club – Ball Ground, Georgia

Qualifiers: Gordon Sargent (a), Kyle Mueller, JJ Grey

Notables to miss the cut: Roberto Castro, Andy Ogletree, Ted Potter Jr., Bill Haas (WD), Patton Kizzire (WD), Oliver Schneiderjans (WD)

Woodmont Country Club – Rockville, Maryland

Qualifiers: Karl Vilips (a), Isaac Simmons (a), Michael Brennan (a), Sebastian Munoz

Notables to miss the cut: Marc Leishman, Joseph Bramlett, Travis Smyth, Grayson Murray

Highlights: Woodmont hosted a number of superb performances by amateur golfers with Karl Vilips (a), Isaac Simmons (a), and Michael Brennan (a) all qualifying.

Brennan hit one of the shots of the day in the playoff in front of an excited crowd around the green, hitting a high chip from an impossible greenside position to make a stunning up-and-down.

Brookside Golf & Country Club and The Lakes Golf & Country Club – Columbus, Ohio

Qualifiers: Olin Browne Jr, Davis Thompson, Eric Cole, Nicolas Echavarria, Corey Pereira, Luke List, Patrick Rodgers, Stewart Cink, Kevin Streelman, Nick Dunlap (a), David Nyfjall (a)

Notables to miss the cut: Lucas Glover, Scott Vincent, Erik Van Rooyen, Cameron Champ, Aaron Baddeley, Will McGirt, Kevin Chappell, Peter Uihlein, Jason Kokrak, Peter Malnati, David Lingmerth, Zach Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy (WD)

Highlights: After virtually taking a year off from golf to look after his girlfriend Leah who is suffering from cancer, Corey Pereira carded 65 and 70 to qualify outright and avoid a playoff.

Also at this site in Ohio, Memorial Tournament champion Viktor Hovland refused to rest and caddied for his Oklahoma state pal Zach Bauchou.

Kevin Streelman, Nick Dunlap, and David Nyfjall all made it through a four-for-three playoff, with former US Open champion Lucas Glover missing out.

Springfield Country Club – Springfield, Ohio

Qualifiers: Samuel Stevens, Taylor Pendrith, Nick Hardy, Alex Schaake, Dylan Wu

Notables to miss the cut: Kramer Hickok, Troy Merritt, James Piot, J.J Spaun, Scott Piercy, Beau Hossler, Thomas Detry, Robert Garrigus

Old Chatham Club – Durham, North Carolina

Qualifiers: Yuto Katsuragawa, Patrick Cover, Paul Barjon, Mcclure Meissner, Frankie Capan

Notables to miss the cut: Doc Redman, Harold Varner III, Chesson Hadley, Spencer Levin

Highlights: Harold Varner III may have recently won the LIV Golf Washington DC event, his first professional win on US soil, but he finished three shots shy of a US Open spot in Durham, North Carolina.
